Having reunited for 1976's The Best of Two Worlds, saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian singer/guitarist João Gilberto celebrated the album's release with a week of shows at San Francisco's Keystone Corner. Marking over a decade since the pair had made history with 1964's landmark Getz/Gilberto album, the shows, which took place between May 11-16, 1976, would prove one of the rare times they appeared live together. Resonance Records' 2016 album, Getz/Gilberto '76 (and the separate release Moments in Time), documents these shows via live recordings made by Keystone Korner club owner Todd Barkan.

Beyond any doubt, french band Pj5 is influenced by English and Scandinavian rock, pop and electro bands, as well as the New York jazz scene. The band stays strongly attached to the wide jazz tradition and at the same time offers a modern sound where the melody thread is always running throughout the music. On stage, Pj5 sends out a huge sound, with an omnipresent melodic lyricism, and explosive energy. Feeling very concerned about the current ecological problems, alarming consumption trends and depletion of the planet’s resources, Paul Jarret, Pj5 leader, found a comforting source of inspiration for writing his new album : the trees. In this album simply titled «Trees», all the songs have as a common theme the Tree, symbol of patience and wisdom, incarnation of mystery, beauty and magic of Nature, source of food, material and oxygen, indispensable to the Man who too often forget it.

A Frenchman with Spanish blood, 22-year-old guitarist Thibaut Garcia makes his Erato debut with Leyendas (Legends), an atmospheric recital of music by Spanish and Argentinian composers: Albéniz, Falla, Rodrigo, Tárrega (his famous, shimmering Recuerdos de la Alhambra), Manjón and Piazzolla. “I wanted to show the guitar in its full glory,” says Garcia. “These legendary works are so close to my heart because they are part of my life and my travels.”

I still remember the first time I heard Ahmed Malek. It was 2012. Back then I didn’t know much about Arabic music, but I was about to leave Berlin for a couple of weeks to go to Tunisia. I was working as a project manager for a music recoding session which ended up being released by Jakarta Records as the “Sawtuha” release. I knew I would have some time off during my stay and I was certain that I would dedicate some of this time to diggin. I asked some people whether they knew of any titles that I should look for. Roskow, who also ended up re-mastering this release, told me about an Algerian composer called Ahmed Malek whose music was also released in Tunisia.

This album presents four world premiere recordings of works by Christopher Rouse (b. 1949), the New York Philharmonic’s second Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence, three of them composed for the orchestra and Music Director Alan Gilbert. Taken together, the Fourth Symphony, Prospero’s Rooms and Odna Zhizn bear witness to a remarkable period of artistic collaboration between the legendary orchestra, its celebrated Music Director, and one of America’s most evocative composers.

"City of New Orleans" is a 1984 album by country musician Willie Nelson, released by Columbia Records. The title track was penned by Steve Goodman, originally recorded by Arlo Guthrie in 1972; Nelson's version of the song topped the U.S. country singles chart. The album also features renditions of "Please Come to Boston" and "Wind Beneath My Wings".

The African drums and rhythms that originated in Yorubaland, have been an integral part of the Santeria religion in Cuba, and a profound influence on the rumbero percussionists on the island. Pedrito Martinez is a premier conga master who hails from the Cayo Hueso barrio in La Habana, and is also an akpwon (lead singer) and santero priest, guiding the ceremonious drumming and invocations of the spirits. Habana Dreams was recorded in the historic Areíto/EGREM studios in the city, and marks a triumphant homecoming for the prodigal son.

This very attractive release from Channel Classics features the terrific British period instrument ensemble Florilegium in performances of three Vivaldi concertos and two sacred vocal works. The group plays without a conductor and the players' shapely unanimity of phrasing and nuanced expressiveness give the performances the character of chamber music. It sidesteps the metric squareness that can plague performances of Vivaldi and let the music breathe and surge organically. The strings have the slight tartness of Baroque instruments and the overall sound of the orchestra has an appealing burnished sheen. This is relatively obscure repertoire and includes a flute concerto that was only discovered in 2010 and is recorded here for the first time, played beautifully by Ashley Solomon, the artistic director of Florilegium.

Jazz-Dixieland stalwarts The Hot Sardines are one of a select handful of newer bands playing old school, 1930s-style swing music. The band is celebrating their 9th year on the jazz circuit with the release of their sophomoric studio album French Fries & Champagne. The follow up to their largely successful self-titled debut recording, French Fries & Champagne showcases some of the best that the current Dixieland movement has to offer.
