"To speak of the origins of this music is to speak of Spaniards who leave their country to seek a new life and get lost in the jungle with mosquitoes and snakes, of blacks thrown into boats and whipped to work, of Amerindians assaulted by absolute evil with its cross, which massacres them because they believe in the gods of the river and the sun. And then there's the tragedy within the tragedy: the exodus of Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans from their island in the sun to the wintry slums of New York. Well, that's what New York salsa is all about.
