Keyboardist James Carney's dream group features a four-horn frontline: two saxes, a trumpet and a trombone. The music he’s given his starry band of improvisers to interpret on 2007's Green-Wood is beautifully crafted and intensely grooving in various feels, from second line and funk to 6/4 and complex time signatures. Inspired by the whole tradition, Carney’s aesthetic unites the jazz mainstream and avant-garde, blending musical derring-do with a post-bop-meets-chamber-music-and-rock lyricism. His band delivers with individuality and relish, while the high resolution recording makes the most of earcatching voicings, timbres and textures. It’s obvious both from his words and his music that Carney’s enthusiasm and energy is tempered by great thoughtfulness and reverence for the art form.

“How the fuck are we going to turn this into a song?” That’s the question Lou Barlow and John Davis have asked themselves since co-founding the Folk Implosion in the early 1990s. Beginning with improvised jams featuring Barlow on bass and Davis on drums, the duo develop their beat-driven pop collages from the ground up. It’s the process they used on their debut cassette, Walk Through This World with the Folk Implosion, and one they’ve returned to 30 years later on their spellbinding, self-referencing reunion, Walk Thru Me.

German composer Carl Teike came into contact with military music at an early age, but with his modest temperament he never achieved a high rank during his time in the army. He resigned from his post after his bandmaster told him to burn Alte Kameraden , a piece that would become one of the most popular marches in the world. Teike’s marches are entirely original and significantly enrich the German concert repertoire with their inventiveness, musical charisma and colourful instrumentation. This programme includes his first march, the Prinz-Albrecht-Marsch , which he dedicated to the Prussian monarch who ‘graciously accepted the dedication’. This is the first of three volumes.

Drawing on historical texts, Fabrice Bollon’s opera The Folly focuses on Erasmus of Rotterdam, the influential Renaissance reformer, cosmopolitan humanist and intellectual, who, in old age, reflects on the events of his life. Past and present converge as fictional figures from his books or real-life antagonists appear in much the same way as Bollon merges periods through his creative use of several 16th-century compositions. Set in an age of polarised extremism that reflects our own times, Erasmus’s humanism requires vigilance, defence and reinvention.

Armenia has a long and vibrant musical tradition. Armenia’s far-reaching musical tradition was collected and developed in the late 19th century to the early 20th century, primarily by Komitas Vardapet, an important priest and musicologist. We are particularly familiar with symphonic works by composers such as Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978). But Armenian composers such as Arno Babadzhanian (1921-1983) and Komitas have also written important works for piano. The pianist Tsovinar Suflyan has compiled a large cross-section of these on her album ‘Armenian Miniatures’.
