Never-before issued recordings from legendary Motown guitarist, Dennis Coffey, captured live at Morey Baker’s Showplace Lounge in Detroit in 1968. One of the Funk Brothers, as featured in the Grammy award winning documentary “Standing in The Shadows of Motown”, Coffey has played with countless musicians from Quincy Jones to Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder. Hot Coffey in the D was produced by Mike Theodore and Coffey, the same team that produced the recently rediscovered folk singer Rodriguez’s debut album Cold Fact (1970) and the soundtrack to the Academy Award winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man”. These recordings showcase Coffey in his prime, raw and unfiltered, with fellow Detroiters organist Lyman Woodard (former musical director for Martha and the Vandellas) and drummer Melvin Davis (Smokey Robinson, Wayne Kramer).

Written when the composer was only in his late twenties, Mahler's first symphony is a study in optimism. 'In full sail' (his original title for the second movement) could be a motto for the whole work. In this vast symphony, we hear his love of nature and beauty, Mahler's childhood memories, fragments of distant military music, birdsong and even Yiddish folk tunes as they blend together into a paean to life and hope. The work's tribute to Beethoven is seen in its architecture, as it takes cues from his idol's famous ninth symphony. The fact that Mahler's first was debuted in the Hungarian capital Budapest gives Ivan Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra a unique connection to its history.

Ahmad Jamal's Alhambra, recorded live in June 1961 by engineer Ron Malo (the same man who recorded the classic Muddy Waters/Folk Singer), might not be as famous or well-known as Bill Evans' Waltz For Debby, but it belongs in the same class. This is such a beautiful performance and perfect recording that it by rights should be an all-time audiophile classic. And as a DSD, hi-res download, it's finally got its chance to get its due. This is as intimate and detailed a live recording as exists. You're in the room! One of the All-Time-Best Recordings, Captured by Needle Drop Direct to DSD.

Walter recorded the Beethoven symphonies in stereo for Columbia in 1958-59, taping Nos. 2 & 6 in Los Angeles with orchestra of freelance and studio musicians who rose magnificently to the occasion. Walter was in his eighties, but that didn’t stop him from grabbing these works by the throat; there is no mincing around, no effusive lingering over phrases, no ponderous trudging either.
