This is one of two recordings of the Double Concerto that Mstislav Rostropovich performed. That the cello's repertoire has been so wonderfully enriched during the 20th century is due largely to Mstislav Rostropovich, the most influential cellist of his time, a champion of liberty, and also a noted conductor and pianist. Rostropovich was closely associated with EMI Classics (now Warner Classics) for more than 50 years, having made 100 recordings with the company between 1954 and his death in 2007, just a month after celebrations for his 80th birthday at the Kremlin.

This disc coupling David Oistrakh’s magical & magisterial performances of Bruch’s Scottish Fantasia & Hindemith’s Violin Concerto. The performances themselves are superlative – Jascha Horenstein leads the London Symphony in a detailed accompaniment for Oistrakh’s expressive performance of Bruch’s Fantasia, & Paul Hindemith himself leads the LSO in an aggressive accompaniment for Oistrakh’s muscular performance of his own concerto.

Together for the first time, three acclaimed concertos performed by the soloists who made them famous - dedicatees and performers David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich, and then Leonard Bernstein himself, pianiste, conductor and composer with the less beloved Concerto Op.102. Lenny has produced a successful rendering of this curious cocktail - a tribute to Rococo style Bach, an entranced romantic andante along with a caricature of Prokofiev style virtuoso piano in the opening and closing allegros.

The 1960 famous recording by David Oistrakh and Otto Klemperer with French National Radio Orchestra, known as one of the best recordings of Brahms' violin concerto, is finally on SACD. In addition, to the disc added Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Sir Malcolm Sargent & Philharmonia Orchestra recorded in 1958. For this reprint, have been used a new master that was digitized at 96kHz/24bit from the original master, and mastered to the SACD layer and CD layer separately.
