In German-speaking countries, solo flute music has a long tradition, beginning with Johann Sebastian Bach's celebrated Partita in A minor, BWV 1013, an unrivaled and, in a sense, never-before-seen masterpiece. When Bach wrote his Partita in A minor, around 1720, the German flute (also known to the English as the German flute) was just beginning its meteoric career, which would quickly make it one of the world's most popular instruments. It was made almost exclusively of wood, and was a very different instrument from today's, constructed of precious metal (silver or, better yet, gold).
