The communal act of improvisation shared between artists of deep understanding and appreciation can be truly breathtaking. In early 2024, longtime friends and collaborators cornetist Kirk Knuffke and bassist Thommy Andersson invited the legendary pianist/improviser Marilyn Crispell to perform with them and capture some of that magic. Meeting in Crispell’s haunts of Upstate New York, the trio recorded Paintbrush, a tremendous collection of thoughtful and illustrative pieces which capture their voices displayed on an aural canvas.

Acclaimed trumpeter and composer Adam O’Farrill introduces ELEPHANT, his first quartet as the sole horn voice, with a self-titled debut to be released March 20, 2026 via Out of Your Head Records on CD, LP, hi-res download, and streaming. Widely regarded as one of the most vital musicians of his generation, O’Farrill has been hailed by The New York Times as “among the leading trumpeters in jazz” and “perhaps the music’s next major improviser.”

Trombonist Karin Hammar has led the ensemble Karin Hammar Fab4 since 2014 - a group that continuously tours both nationally and internationally. With four critically acclaimed releases under their belt and over 10 million streams on Spotify, the group has cemented its position on the jazz scene. Karin Hammar Fab4 is known for collaborating with international guests, and now one of European jazz's new rising stars - Norwegian trumpeter and hornist Hildegunn Oiseth - joins Fab4's prominent roster of soloists.

Recorded in Oslo in September 1970, Afric Pepperbird was released on New Year’s Day in 1971. Half a century later, it still conveys the freshness and excitement of discoveries being made. The album signalled the arrival of four Norwegian improvisers – Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen – at the fledgling ECM label. It was the start of a lifelong association with each of the musicians, whose influence was soon to reach far beyond the borders of their homeland. In extended passages on Afric Pepperbird, with Christensen and Andersen stretching out, it’s quite often Rypdal effectively holding the centre with taut chords. Everybody is roaring here, with Garbarek deep into his free jazz vocabulary. “Garbarek should be heard,” wrote reviewer Joe Klee in DownBeat. “I would venture that not since Django Reinhardt has there been a European jazz musician so original and forward-looking as this young Norwegian.”

Mysterious, dramatic and alluring, Luminessence comes from a peak period in the creative association between Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, recorded in 1974, immediately after their vibrant Belonging album. Here, Jarrett creates shimmering orchestral frameworks to spur Garbarek to some of his most concentrated, impassioned and expressive playing. “The melodies that Jarrett writes sound like Garbarek improvisations, so great is the rapport between the two men,” wrote Ian Carr in his Keith Jarrett biography, while DownBeat, in a 5-star review, observed that “probing deep into his own personal musical cosmos, Jarrett has brought back a chilling and singular achievement that promises to stand as a landmark in the musical landscape of the 70s”.

In the dynamically powerful, yet delicate sound of Karin Nakagawa's koto and voice, combined with the ethereal whisper of Arve Henriksen's trumpet, an unrehearsed dialogue unfolds into a rare synchronism between two souls.The duet is reminiscent of an archaic hymn to transience, which finds its solace in the embrace of beauty. According to the two artists, this session was inspired solely by a brief past exchange about the allure of Japanese gardens and the concept of Ikigai.

Gábor Gadó and Veronika Harcsa are two artists known primarily as jazz musicians, yet their work is increasingly shifting towards classical, early and contemporary music. Their musical encounter is already documented in two albums for BMC Records: Shekhinah (2023) presented Gadó’s most recent pieces with texts by Veronika Harcsa, while The Language of Flowers (2024) – honored with the Citizen Jazz ÉLU and Jazz Magazine CHOC awards – revived Gadó’s compositions written more than two decades ago to lyrics by Eszter Molnár, originally for singer Gábor Winand.

Widely regarded as one of the defining voices in modern jazz, Dave Holland announces Freedom Call, the first box set collection of his distinguished career. Scheduled for release in October 2026 on Edition Records to coincide with his 80th birthday, the six-LP and three-CD collection brings together previously unreleased live recordings from three defining ensembles in Holland's career - Sextet, Quintet and Prism - captured live and presented together for the first time.

I really like to read scientific articles about nature, stars, quantum physics. One of them says that NASA estimates that there are about 100 to 400 billion stars in our galaxy. In 2015, scientists estimated that there are three trillion trees on Earth. I found this data really impressive. I enjoy hiking in the forest, being in nature and I always felt some mystical energies around trees. Sometimes I wonder that their sense of time is different than ours. In this manner trees are very similar to stars. What it takes decades for us, it is just a short period of time for them. I wanted to express this in my 6 new compositions and arrangements on this album. I wanted to create a dreamy sound and told my musicians to try to take it slow, to listen to each other, to improvise together and let flow with the music. Let the music take us - and the listener- to unknown places, just like when you find a new route in the forest.

Grammy Award-winning pianist Kris Davis will release the second album from her trio, Lost in Geneva, on September 25, 2026, via 4166 Records. The album follows the trio's acclaimed 2024 debut, Run the Gauntlet, and again features bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake.

Creative Inspirations is the debut recording by Trio Imagination, an extraordinary collaboration that brings together pianist David Virelles, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Andrew Cyrille. It pairs Virelles - who is known for his all-encompassing approach to creativity that is deeply-rooted in the Cuban influences of his upbringing - with two towering figures of creative music, whose individual work have helped shape the evolution of modern jazz for more than six decades.
