Béla Anton Leoš Fleck is an American banjo player. Widely acknowledged as one of the world's most innovative and technically proficient banjo players, he is best known for his work with the bands New Grass Revival and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. "Drive" was produced toward the end of Fleck's New Grass Revival career and before the Flecktones were formed and included an all-star list of bluegrass performers.

The Allmusic website awarded the album 4½ stars stating "Sessions in any genre of music are all too often described as "sublime," but seldom has that description been better deserved than with this relaxed hard bop classic. Dmitry Shostakovich had a kind of protean musical genius that could take the shape of any container it was poured into. But what would have happened if his genius had been less adaptable? He might have ended up like Gavriil Popov: virtually unknown 100 years after his birth and 32 years since his death. These two composers had remarkably similar backgrounds. Both were daring young stars ascending in the Soviet firmament until the state intervened and censured them in the 1930's. Shostakovich adapted and recovered artistically; Popov did not. With this excellent new recording of Popov's early 1st Symphony, Leon Botstein and the London Symphony show us just how big Popov might have been. There are echoes of Shostakovich's tart writing, but there is also much that is original.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson CC CQ OOnt (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. Considered a virtuoso and one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, Peterson released more than 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and received numerous other awards and honours.

Ricardo Gallén, one of the most outstanding guitarists of our time, gives an impressive and stylish rendition of these masterpieces, performing on a copy of a 19th-century Fabricatore guitar by Arnoldo García.

The three mono recordings that make up this program were originally released on the Skylark and/or Tampa Records labels in the early to mid-1950s under various names including Shorty and Paul Nero. The first recordings consist of material that feature The Lighthouse All Stars and Vivien Garry. The second set features Maynard Ferguson with Paul Nero, Bob Cooper, Abe Most, Paul Smith, and others in two extended jam session numbers. The final set is by Charlie Shavers, accompanied by Tommy Dorsey band mates recorded in late 1946 or early 1947.
