This 1954 studio date, a self-titled album recorded for Emarcy, was later reissued as Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown to denote the involvement of one of the top trumpeters of the day. Vaughan sings nine intimate standards with a band including Brown on trumpet, Herbie Mann on flute, and Paul Quinichette on tenor.

Like swing guitarist Charlie Christian, Clifford Brown was incredibly influential for someone who died so young. The Fats Navarro-minded trumpeter was only 25 when a car accident claimed his life in 1956, but his influence remained long after his death – Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Donald Byrd, and Carmell Jones were among the many trumpet titans who were heavily influenced by Brown.

J. J. Johnson, also known as Jay Jay Johnson, was an American jazz trombonist, bandleader, arranger and composer. For this release J.J. Johnson teams up with trumpet legend Clifford Brown, saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke. The six track EP was originally released in 1953 under Blue Note Records and features tracks "Lover Man", "It Could Happen to You" and "Get Happy". Clifford Brown steals the spotlight from Johnson in this EP with his complex harmonic progressions and up-tempo expertise.

The album was the last full recording including pianist Richie Powell and trumpeter Clifford Brown, who both died in a car accident three months later. Although Rollins is clearly the group leader on this date, the style and playing are logical extensions of the fine work being done by the Brown-Roach group on Emarcy Records at the time.
