Lectures in Magnetohydrodynamics: With an Appendix on Extended MHD by Dalton D. Schnack
English | PDF (True) | 2009 | 317 Pages | ISBN : 3642006876 | 5.5 MB

Magnetohydrodynamics, or MHD, is a theoretical way of describing the statics and dynamics of electrically conducting uids. The most important of these uids occurring in both nature and the laboratory are ionized gases, called plasmas. These have the simultaneous properties of conducting electricity and being electrically charge neutral on almost all length scales. The study of these gases is called plasma physics. MHD is the poor cousin of plasma physics. It is the simplest theory of plasma dynamics. In most introductory courses, it is usually afforded a short chapter or lecture at most: Alfven ´ waves, the kink mode, and that is it. (Now, on to Landau damping!) In advanced plasma courses, such as those dealing with waves or kinetic theory, it is given an even more cursory treatment, a brief mention on the way to things more profound and interesting. (It is just MHD! Besides, real plasma phy- cists do kinetic theory!) Nonetheless, MHD is an indispensable tool in all applications of plasma physics.

Principles of Magnetic Resonance

Principles of Magnetic Resonance by Charles P. Slichter
English | PDF | 1990 | 662 Pages | ISBN : 3540501576 | 50 MB

The first edition of this book was written in 1961 when I was Morris Loeb Lecturer in Physics at Harvard. In the preface I wrote: "The problem faced by a beginner today is enormous. If he attempts to read a current article, he often finds that the first paragraph refers to an earlier paper on which the whole article is based, and with which the author naturally assumes familiarity. That reference in turn is based on another, so the hapless student finds himself in a seemingly endless retreat. I have felt that graduate students or others beginning research in magnetic resonance needed a book which really went into the details of calculations, yet was aimed at the beginner rather than the expert. " The original goal was to treat only those topics that are essential to an understanding of the literature. Thus the goal was to be selective rather than comprehensive. With the passage of time, important new concepts were becoming so all-pervasive that I felt the need to add them. That led to the second edition, which Dr. Lotsch, Physics Editor of Springer-Verlag, encouraged me to write and which helped launch the Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences. Now, ten years later, that book (and its 1980 revised printing) is no longer available. Meanwhile, workers in magnetic resonance have continued to develop startling new insights.

Methods in the Quantum Theory of Magnetism by Sergei Vladimirovich Tyablikov

Magnetic properties are exhibited to a greater or lesser ex- tent by all substances. Among solids, we can distinguish a group of magnetic substances whose magnetic properties are particular- ly pronounced: ferromagnets, ferrimagnets, and antiferromag- nets. The present treatment deals with some of the problems aris- ing in the theory of the magnetic phenomena in such substances. We shall call the theory of phenomena in strongly magnetic sub- stances the theory of strong magnetism or, simply, the theory of magnetism, because the weakly magnetic substances (paramagnets and diamagnets) will not be considered. The emphasis is on the methods giving general solutions and on the features character- istic of magnetic problems. The microscopic approach is used throughout.

Magnetoelectric Response in Low-Dimensional Frustrated Spin Systems by Shinichiro Seki
English | PDF | 2012 | 119 Pages | ISBN : 4431540903 | 7.3 MB

Electric control of magnetic properties, or inversely, magnetic control of dielectric properties in solids, is called a magnetoelectric effect and has long been investigated from the point of view of both fundamental physics and potential application. Magnetic and dielectric properties usually show minimal coupling, but it recently has been discovered that magnetically induced ferroelectricity in some spiral magnets enables remarkably large and versatile magnetoelectric responses. To stabilize such helimagnetism, magnetic frustration (competition between different magnetic interactions) is considered the key. In the present work, two of the most typical frustrated spin systems—triangular lattice antiferromagnets and edge-shared chain magnets—have systematically been investigated. Despite the crystallographic simplicity of target systems, rich magnetoelectric responses are ubiquitously observed. The current results published here offer a useful guideline in the search for new materials with unique magnetoelectric functions, and also provide an important basis for a deeper understanding of magnetoelectric phenomena in more complex systems.

Advanced Theory of Fractional-Slot Concentrated-Wound Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines by Mohammad Farshadnia
English | PDF | 2018 | 266 Pages | ISBN : 9811087075 | 11.8 MB

This book focuses on the analytical modeling of fractional-slot concentrated-wound (FSCW) interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines and establishes a basis for their magnetic and electrical analysis. Aiming at the precise modeling of FSCW IPM machines’ magnetic and electrical characteristics, it presents a comprehensive mathematical treatment of the stator magneto-motive force (MMF), the IPM rotor non-homogeneous magnetic saturation, and its airgap flux density. The FSCW stator spatial MMF harmonics are analytically formulated, providing a basis on which a novel heuristic algorithm is then proposed for the design of optimal winding layouts for multiphase FSCW stators with different slot/pole combinations. In turn, the proposed mathematical models for the FSCW stator and the IPM rotor are combined to derive detailed mathematical expressions of its operational inductances, electromagnetic torque, torque ripple and their respective subcomponents, as a function of the machine geometry and design parameters. Lastly, the proposed theories and analytical models are validated using finite element analysis and experimental tests on a prototype FSCW IPM machine.

The Strongest Magnetic Fields in the Universe by V.S. Beskin, A. Balogh, M. Falanga, M. Lyutikov, S. Mereghetti, T. Piran, R.A. Treumann
English | PDF(True) | 2016 | 579 Pages | ISBN : 1493935496 | 31 MB

This volume extends the ISSI series on magnetic fields in the Universe into the domain of what are by far the strongest fields in the Universe, and stronger than any field that could be produced on Earth. The chapters describe the magnetic fields in non-degenerate strongly magnetized stars, degenerate stars (such as white dwarfs and neutron stars), exotic members called magnetars, and in their environments, as well as magnetic fields in the environments of black holes. These strong fields have a profound effect on the behavior of matter, visible in particular in highly variable processes like radiation in all known wavelengths, including Gamma-Ray bursts. The generation and structure of such strong magnetic fields and effects on the environment are also described.

Toroidal Order in Magnetic Metamaterials by Jannis Lehmann
English | EPUB | 2022 | 185 Pages | ISBN : 3030854949 | 55.9 MB

The scope of this work is to provide an extensive experimental investigation of ferrotoroidicity, the most recently established type of ferroic order that is based on the uniform unit-cell-sized alignment of magnetic whirls. This is achieved by transferring basic spin configurations pertinent for the emergence of toroidal order to mesoscopic length scales. An engineering of and access to the system's magnetic degrees of freedom is made possible by using nanomagnetic arrays as model systems. The work reveals microscopic and macroscopic aspects of toroidally ordered matter beyond the reach of natural materials.
