On June 17, the UMC/EMI label will reissue Money For Nothing, the first Dire Straits greatest hits collection (featuring songs from the band’s first five albums), which was originally released in October 1988.

Aside from the alluring title, which in terms of words alone, not music, recalls Jim Hendrix’s “Burning of the Midnight Lamp,” we have a straight-ahead, inspired session led by Toronto-born, NYC-based tenorist Grant Stewart and his usual contingent plus rising NYC-based trumpeter Bruce Harris, making this a classic quintet configuration.

More people have probably heard the luscious violin tone of Louis Kaufman than that of any other violinist. Playing the violin solos in such films as Gone with the Wind, Wuthering Heights, Rebecca, Pinocchio, and Casablanca, Kaufman's violin playing exemplifies the vividly evocative sound of Hollywood's 'Golden Age'. Born to Romanian-Jewish parents in Portland, Oregon, in 1905, Kaufman studied with Franz Kneisel, and began his professional career as the violist in Sascha Jacobsen's famed Musical Art Quartet.

Within this album the “Insolito 8cento” duo (Angelo de Magistris, violin and Rosaria Dina Rizzo, piano) is rediscovering a little-known feature of the great Belcanto master Gaetano Donizetti: his chamber works dedicated to the violin, an instrumental production little mentioned and often completely ignored. In fact Donizetti never ceased to deal with the composition of instrumental chamber music, giving life to brilliant works that, same as for his vocal works, testify his extraordinary creative vein in which one can recognize great inspiration, almost like a continuous improvisation, yet always refined and elegant as well as completely devoid of those formal negligence typical of the ‘utility music' or composed for mere exercise or pastime.

Derek Scott, born in Birmingham in 1950, has an international reputation as an historian of the British music hall and other forms of light entertainment. But he is an outstanding composer in his own right – a master craftsman and natural tunesmith, who manages to unite good humour, unerring technique and deep feeling in music of immediate appeal. Although the works recorded here represent his most recent harvest of orchestral music, for many of them he revisited material composed earlier in his career, using it as the basis for a series of new scores, some exhibiting a very English sense of whimsy, others concerned with deeper matters – one, indeed, inspired by the war in Ukraine. This album has been released with remarkable speed: it was recorded only on 15–18 May this year.

During Joseph Haydn’s lifetime, concertos for solo instruments and ensemble were generally written for a particular musician. In the case of Haydn’s violoncello Concerto in D major Hob.VII:2, this person was Anton Kraft, first cello in the Esterházy ensemble and later one of Vienna’s greatest virtuosi. This composition for a particular occasion has become a masterpiece for the ages; an autograph score by the composer survives, dating from 1783. The services of Haydn specialist Sonja Gerlach have been obtained for this edition of the concerto with piano accompaniment. She enriches the Urtext edition with a detailed preface that also examines the execution of the ornaments and the cadenzas.

Mose Allison is a master of extended technique. On "Wild Man on the Loose", the virtuoso musician is joined by spectacular bassist Earl May and legendary drummer Paul Motian. The trio embeds a rootsy New Orleans sound into an album of mostly originals. With soulful execution, simplistic touches and Allison’s timeless precision, the album is an enchanting masterpiece. Stand out moments include “Wild Man on the Loose”, “War Horse,” “No Trouble Living” and the instrumental stunner “Power House.” This super pristine hi-res download is sonically mesmerizing.

Iggy Pop, known for pioneering punk attitude with his band The Stooges, released his second solo album "Lust for Life" in collaboration with David Bowie in 1977, combining Bowie’s experimental darkness with Iggy Pop’s raucous rock and roll flavour for some of the best-loved proto-punk of the 1970s.

"The Idiot" is the debut solo album by American musician Iggy Pop. It was the first of two albums that Pop wrote and recorded in collaboration with David Bowie, who is credited as producer. The sessions for the album began before the recording of Bowie's 1977 album "Low"; as a result, "The Idiot" has been called the unofficial beginning of Bowie's Berlin period.
