Masaru Imada is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer. For his seventh record for the Three Blind Mice label, Imada decided to do an all standards album with his regular trio. Imada's piano style is straight forward and honest: He doesn't emply any gimmicks or pyrotechnics. Yet, his performance is very swinging and has a singing character. While firmly rooted in the American jazz piano tradition, his voicings and time-feel are uniquely his own.

This is an intriguing programme. The title refers to the Austrian call to dance Alles Walzer, a nod to the standard waltz repertoire, whilst the second part, einmal anders (once in a different way) reflects the more radical approaches to waltz rhythm employed by Ligeti and Bartók. One might add Ravel to this category too, though perhaps his choreographic poem La Valse, played here in the composer's own transcription, stands more on the border between these two camps. I have heard the work described as a requiem for a waltz rather than a celebration; ghosts of the rhythm flit back and forth, seldom lingering, and these shifting sands rhythm and harmony place it some distance from the waltzes of Schubert and Strauss.

The UK's number one big band drummer/bandleader Pete Cater got started early when captivated by his father's records of Joe Morello, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich in early childhood. Since its London debut in 1995 the Pete Cater Big Band has toured extensively, often featuring amazingly authentic recreations of Buddy Rich's repertoire as well as being the house band for the World's Greatest Drummer concert series. The band has released three highy acclaimed CDs, 'Playing With Fire', 'Upswing' and 'The Right Time' and even appeared on ITV with Ronnie Corbett and Miranda Hart.

Just like the other three Bruno Walter releases in Sony Classical’s current crop of SACD reissues, this classic Beethoven/Schubert coupling benefits from the DSD transfer, which reproduces as faithfully as possible the musical content of the original reel-to-reel master tapes.

Gale Zoë Garnett is a New Zealand–born Canadian singer best known in the United States for her Grammy-winning folk hit "We'll Sing in the Sunshine". Garnett has since carved out a career as a writer and actress. Although Garnett had retired from the music business by the 1980s, she continued appearing in feature films (including the 2002 sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and on television shows, usually in supporting roles.

Clearly, RCA had a lot of faith in Garnett, as New Adventures was not only her fifth album overall, but also her fifth album for the label in about two years, though she'd been unable to follow up 1964's "We'll Sing in the Sunshine" with another Top 40 hit.

Charles Calello is an American, singer, composer, conductor, arranger, and record producer. In the late 1950s, Calello was a member of Frankie Valli's group The Four Lovers, but left before the group was transformed into The Four Seasons. In 1962, he became the group's musical arranger. He has worked with such diverse artists as Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Roberto Carlos, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Al Kooper, Bruce Springsteen, and more. Calello has had over 100 Billboard chart records, 38 of which have been top 20.

Vulture Culture is the eighth studio album by the Alan Parsons Project, released in 1985 via the Arista label. Vulture Culture's theme is another in which the fallacy of humankind is front and center. This time Parsons' message concerns the fact that everyone lives in a parasitic society, where it's every man for himself. Those who can't fend for themselves simply won't survive in a world where the kindness of the human spirit is rapidly deteriorating. On this album, though, the songs are weaker and are less effective in bringing out the album's complex idea. As it does have its moments, Vulture Culture lacks in cohesiveness and strength both lyrically and, to a lesser extent, musically. "Let's Talk About Me" addresses the theme in its words, but the choppy rhythm takes away the attractiveness that could have been. The instrumental "Hawkeye" adds life and contrast to the album at just the right time. The most appealing song, "Days Are Numbers (The Traveller)" with vocalist Chris Rainbow at the helm, combines simplicity with a timeless chorus making for a truly beautiful ballad. Even though Parsons' theme is revealed, it's done so with less clarity and doesn't quite hit home. Without the usual balance of absorbing lyrics and well-maintained music, Vulture Culture remains one of this band's less prolific albums.

Her story is one of the most legendary of all twentieth century musicians' stories, and also, one of the most tragic. Cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, born on January 26, 1945, in Oxford, England, to Derek and Iris Du Pré. (Despite the family name, Derek Du Pré was not French, but rather of British Channel Island ancestry; he could trace his lineage back to the Norman Conquest). She blossomed young and achieved international fame in a few short years during the mid-1960s, during which same time she joined Daniel Barenboim in one of history's most celebrated musical marriages. But her career was shattered in the early 1970s – not even a decade into its maturity – by multiple sclerosis.

The world premiere recording of Torelli's Triosonatas opus 2 (1686) performed by violinist Pietro Battistoni together with the Rosso Verona Baroque Ensemble. This recording is an important contribution to our appreciation of Torelli as a pivotal chamber music composer.

Anna Zassimova invited us to take a third journey through the musical landscape of Russian destiny. All these works are parables of implacable destinies against which it seems futile to struggle, but which must be defied in order to follow the veiled path of the soul.

Jonas Johansen Adventure Trio, Johansen’s new group, is a guitar trio with music built on catchy lines and grooves integral to the compositions. The spacey and airy vibe in the music presents Johansen’s most melodic side as a composer. And the group reflects mature musicians wanting to tell a story as directly and clearly as possible. Jonas’s ability to fluently incorporate inspiration from his travels all over the world, becomes the backbone of the groove in the band. It’s a global vibe, as Jonas has a passion, in live and music, for everything that’s global.
