Steve Darrington continued as a professional musician, appearing on over 50 albums, and is the organizer of the Swanage Blues Festival.

On January 10, 2023, Jeff Beck, a lone genius guitarist who suddenly passed away at the age of 78 while still an eternal guitar boy. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Jeff's birth, whose original and superb technique that no one could follow was the envy of guitarists all over the world, a number of his masterpieces left by Epic Records will be reissued in four periods on Japanese analog LPs. The fourth installment will release three titles from 1999 to 2003. This work, "Who Else!", is an instrumental work released in 1999 that reacted sensitively to the trends of the scene at the time and adopted programmed rhythms, entering the so-called digital rock realm. While possessing diversity in techno, blues, and Irish traditional, the sound full of a futuristic sense created with his long-time partner Tony Hymas once again proved that he is a unique guitarist who is constantly renewing himself. This time, it will be reissued on analog LP for the first time in the world!

Dylan followed Oh Mercy, his most critically acclaimed album in years, with Under the Red Sky, a record that seemed like a conscious recoil from that album's depth and atmosphere. By signing Don Was, the king of mature retro-rock, as producer, he guaranteed that the record would be lean and direct, which is perhaps exactly what this collection of simplistic songs deserves. Still, this record feels a little ephemeral, a collection of songs that Dylan didn't really care that much about. In a way, that makes it a little easier to warm to than its predecessor, since it has a looseness that suits him well, especially with songs this deliberately lightweight. As such, Under the Red Sky is certainly lightweight, but rather appealing in its own lack of substance, since Dylan has never made a record so breezy, apart from (maybe) Down in the Groove. That doesn't make it a great, or even good, record, but it does have its own charms that will be worth searching out for Dylanphiles.

It's not surprising that Lou Reed finds a kindred spirit in Edgar Allan Poe. The godfather of punk's early ambition was to bring the darker elements of great literature–decay, death, and decadence–to rock & roll. The Raven was born following a spoken-word performance of Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" during which Reed "came to understand it in a way I never had before." Accordingly, The Raven may strike Reed's longtime fans in a way the artist never has before. Although dark, the music is stylistically all over the place–from Velvet Underground-like rock instrumentals to actor Steve Buscemi's creepy lounge-lizard take on the anti-showbiz "Broadway Song," to moments that recall such diverse past Reed ventures as Metal Machine Music and the Bells. He even reprises two classics–"Perfect Day" and "The Bed" from Transformer and Berlin, respectively – in almost unrecognizable forms. Ornette Coleman and David Bowie drop in, and actors read text in which Reed mixes Poe's poems and stories with his own words. The opium references are surely Poe's; the explicit images probably all Reed's. It's hard to tell, though; the blend's that good. – Bill Holdship
