The violin concerto The Wandering of a Little Soul was a mere unfinished project of Leoš Janáček (1854–1928). In May 1926, when he returned from an official visit to England, where his Sonata for Violin and Piano was played by the excellent violinist Adila Fachiri, he was impressed by her performance and considered composing a violin concerto, which he called “The Wandering of a Little Soul”. However, he soon abandoned the work in progress and put the manuscript score aside. It is a mysterious composition about which we know very little. Janáček later used parts of this concerto in the overture to the opera From the House of the Dead, and it is interesting that already in the score of the violin concerto we find the banging of the prison shackles – as if a prelude to the next opera. The reconstruction of this composition was performed by Miloš Štědroň and Leoš Faltus.

Janna Gandelman is the concertmaster of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.She is a Professor of Violin at the Buchman Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University and teaches at the Jerusalem Conservatory of Music. At the age of 5, she started to play the violin, taking lessons with Professor Weiner. At a very young age, she has won numerous competitions still in the Soviet Union, National Violin Competition, Stoliarsky School Competition, International competition of USSR, and Auer Competition.After immigration to Israel in 1979, she continued her studies with the legendary violin pedagogue, Professor Bondarenko, David Oistrach's assistant. Janna plays on Nicolas Lupot violin from 1799, loaned generously by the Yehuda Zisapel Foundation.

Pressed between 1943 and 1949, V Discs (or Victory Discs) boosted the morale of U.S. soldiers at the warfront and kept them up to date with the latest music from home. They were freely distributed but forbidden for sale, and the FBI would even have powers to destroy all copies in circulation at war’s end. Every great artist of the period made a patriotic gesture, and the records contained every genre: jazz, classical, pop, blues and folk. Jazz was fashionable then and took the lion’s share; it became an emblem for the liberators of Europe before spreading across the world. Michel Legrand was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. After showing great promise as a jazz arranger — working notably with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Bill Evans — he turned his hand to the French “chanson” genre and composed for Boris Vian and Henri Salvador, Jacques Brel or Maurice Chevalier. He then became probably the most famous composer of melodies for France’s Nouvelle Vague filmmakers — Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Jean-Luc Godard —, but it was only the beginning, for he went on to be one of the most illustrious film composers in the world. The pair defected during a 1963 tour of Britain, and Ashkenazy soon began a recording career with the associated Decca and London labels, on whose roster he would remain for decades. He became an Icelandic citizen in 1972 and has also lived in Switzerland. In the early 1970s he began conducting as well. Ashkenazy became principal conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London from 1987 to 1994, of the Czech Philharmonic from 1998 to 2003, and of the Sydney Symphony in Australia from 2009 to 2013, as well as other groups, and he has been widely visible as a guest conductor, including in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. Ashkenazy's piano playing is bright and incisive, with clear articulation and an intellectual depth that does not interfere with the production of warm feeling.

Unquestionably Manuel María Ponce stands as one of the composers for the classical guitar of all time. Rare would be the virtuoso who does not acknowledge his brilliance. However, to reach such heights, history had to gift us a providential encounter with the greatest ambassador of the guitar in the 20th century: Andrés Segovia. Their profound relationship of friendship, respect, and admiration, evidenced through a fraternal correspondence and declarations, began in 1923. At that time, Ponce was a professor of Harmony at the National Conservatory of Mexico and a music critic. Manuel Ponce composed the Sonatas between 1923 and 1929, all commissioned and dedicated to Andrés Segovia. They constitute the first collection of Sonatas written in the 20th century by a non-guitarist composer, forming a fundamental and unique corpus in the concert guitar repertoire. Each Sonata possesses stylistic and formal characteristics that Segovia himself detailed.
