The “Nuggets”of Krautrock?
“Cologne Curiosities” collects, for the first time on vinyl, all the otherwise unpublished/un-reissued material that firstly appeared on the three "Unknown Deutschland - The Krautrock Archive" CDs released on Virgin during 1996. These CD only releases were originally compiled by Trevor Manwaring (Paratactile, Impetus, Virgin, Harmonia Mundi) from tapes supplied to him by Toby Robinson. Toby - aka The Mad Twiddler, aka Genius P. Orridge - is well-known to Krautrock collectors as one of a number of engineers working at Stockhausen’s WDR and Dierks Studio in Cologne in the mid-1970's, where he assisted on recordings by many famous Kraut bands such as Can, Birth Control, Mythos or Dzyan. The recordings included here were made between 1972 and 1976 using studios in and around Cologne, produced by Toby Robinson for his own amusement, just having fun on the studio. Inevitably, bands would come in for practice sessions, to record demo's, and during slack periods impromptu jams would happen. Most of these sessions were recorded by Toby, and they feature Toby himself plus a revolving cast of friends and musicians (some of them apparently big Kraut names under pseudonym).

SUPERB PERFORMANCE FROM PETER GABRIEL AT THE 1994 WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL Peter Gabriel released his seventh studio album Us in 1992. Co-produced by Gabriel with Daniel Lanois, on the record he explored the pain of recent personal problems; his failed first marriage, his relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette and the growing distance between his first daughter and himself. The result was one of Gabriel's most personal albums. It met with less success than its predecessor So, but still reached No. 2 in the album chart on both sides of the Atlantic; Gabriel also achieved modest chart success with the singles Digging in the Dirt , and Steam . Peter Gabriel followed the release of the album with a world tour and an accompanying double CD and DVD release, Secret World Live in 1994. The final date of the tour was Peter Gabriel s performance at the 1994 Woodstock Festival, in Saugerties, NY on 14th August 1994. One of the best shows on the tour, the entire set - and indeed much of the festival - was broadcast on both TV, and across FM Radio. Previously unreleased, the full set Gabriel and band played on the 25th anniversary of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival is now available in superb quality on this CD.

UK three CD set. One Way Glass is a very different kind of RPM compilation. Instead of the usual cross-section of '60s collectables, this unique release takes a fresh look at British music from the late '60s through to the mid-'70s, with an eye on overlooked dancefloor-friendly finds. The rhythmic backbone of One Way Glass lies in progressive rock outfits who - every so often - would emulate their jazz heroes and record funky sides tucked away on albums or B-sides. Many of these tracks (Jonesy, Hardin & York) have been known to collectors of Funky Breaks for years. In addition, One Way Glass boasts some excellent funky Folk tracks which lighten the load for the listener - tracks by Alan James Eastwood, Bridget St. John, Dana Gillespie, Joan Armatrading and Melanie, for example. More typical funk rock selections come from Hanson (featuring future Bob Marley & The Wailers mainstay Junior Marvin on guitar) and Curtis Knight Zeus (fronted by Jimi Hendrix's old bandmate and featuring future Motorhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke). Maybe it all started - in terms of breaks and hip hop culture, at least - with DJ Kool Herc, who would spin key segments from old rock records to create the funky break.

Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the '70s.

Sometimes perfection is a real bore. In an age where karaoke puppets and corporate niche marketing have rubbed any rough edges from our aural diet, it comes as quite a shock to hear stuff like this. For, while most of this material stems from a timeframe and genre that prided itself on its musical ability, it's by no means a smooth and unchallenging ride. Even Richard Madeley's favourite band, the Moody Blues (who provide the title track to this anthology) sound edgy and mysterious to modern ears. And yet it all fell under the banner of the mighty Decca label.

Formed in September 1972 in the wake of Colosseum's split by ex-members keyboard player Dave Greenslade and bassist Tony Reeves, with keyboardist Dave Lawson and drummer Andrew McCulloch, Greenslade made their live debut at Frankfurt's Zoom Club in November 1972. In January 1973 Greenslade recorded their first BBC session for Bob Harris's Sounds Of The 70s and their TV debut followed a few weeks later, on BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test.

It's been a half century since Pavlov's Dog burst onto the burgeoning progressive rock scene of the early 1970s. Hailing from the city of St. Louis, Missouri, their heady blend of rock, classical and folk music turned them into cult legends. The band has seen lots of lineup changes and internal turmoil over the years, leading to extended breaks between album releases. But today, David Surkamp – lead singer, main songwriter and last remaining original member of Pavlov's Dog – continues to fly the banner high, accompanied by an accomplished group of musicians that is a credit to the band’s good name. This year – exactly 50 years since Pavlov Dog recorded their legendary debut Pampered Menial – the group plans to release a new album of original material and head out for an extended 50th anniversary concert tour. What's more: The box set Essential Recordings 1974 – 2018 combines five newly remastered recordings from their vibrant career in a deluxe re-release package.

Four CD set. Emerging from the ashes of Southend-based late '60s psych-pop crew Cardboard Orchestra, heavy rock band ZIOR were one of the first acts to attach themselves at the turn of the decade to the occult-themed heavy rock element of the British underground scene. Although ZIOR never really threatened to replicate the commercial success of brand leaders Black Sabbath, their live shows were hugely theatrical events involving mock-sacrifices, staged fights and diabolic costumes and masks that terrified their young audiences and apparently freaked out other bands as well! They also left behind three albums that have been wildly collectable for many years. Their self-titled debut set ZIOR was issued in 1971 by the Nepentha label in a highly atmospheric gatefold sleeve design by the legendary Keef. A year or so later, Nepentha boss Larry Page put out the German-only release Every Inch A Man, an equally thrilling collection. Sandwiched between those two albums, ZIOR also pseudonymously recorded the LP The First Monument, which was promoted as the work of members of a witches' coven in downtown Essex. All three albums, plus ZIOR's 2018 reunion album Spirit Of The Gods, are now collected for the first time on Before My Eyes Go Blind, a 4-CD set that's presented in a clamshell box with replica album sleeve wallets, a lengthy new essay on the band and a number of evocative, previously unpublished photos.

"The Tide Turns" (2002) by Blezqi Zatsaz is an album that combines elements of electronic and ambient music. Known for its experimental sound, the album features a mix of intricate soundscapes, lush textures, and hypnotic rhythms, creating an immersive listening experience. Blezqi Zatsaz, a project by producer and musician Eberhard Kranemann, often explores themes of transformation and fluidity, which is reflected in the album's title. "Sarabanda" by Venegoni & Co. is an album originally released in 1979 and later reissued in 2002. The group, led by guitarist and composer Franco Venegoni, is known for blending progressive rock, jazz, and classical influences, creating a unique sound characterized by intricate arrangements and melodic compositions. The album features a mix of instrumental tracks that showcase virtuosic musicianship and a rich tapestry of sounds. "Sarabanda" is noted for its innovative use of guitar, keyboards, and orchestral elements, making it a standout in the Italian progressive rock scene of the late 1970s.

UK five CD set. Evolving from the line-up that had recorded the highly-regarded Ora LP in 1969, Byzantium recorded two early Seventies albums - Byzantium and Seasons Changing, both featuring future Ian Dury MD Chaz Jankel - for the A&M label. After leaving A&M, the band self-financed the 1974 Live/Studio album in an effort to attract new representation before splitting the following year. Although they received relatively little attention from the music industry at the time, Byzantium's progressive rock-based combination of musical eclecticism, strong harmonies and timeless song writing have belatedly attracted an audience, with collectors now paying significant sums to acquire original vinyl pressings of their recordings.
