Universal’s 2010 collection Icon rounds up recordings Johnny Cash made during his stint on Mercury in the ‘80s, which means that the versions of “I Walk the Line,” “Cry Cry Cry,” “Guess Things Happen That Way,” “Get Rhythm,” “Hey Porter,” “Wanted Man,” “Ring of Fire,” and “Folsom Prison Blues” included here are not the original hit versions. They’re perfectly fine remakes supported by such ‘80s vintage recordings as “The Night Hank Williams Came to Town” and a cover of Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle.” This will inevitably be a let-down for those looking for the originals, but they’re solid versions and this collection is enjoyable for what it is.

Fado Tradicional is the fifth studio album by Portuguese fado singer Mariza, released on 29 November 2010 by EMI Music Portugal. It was recorded in the Lisboa Estúdios in Portugal between July and September 2010 and produced by musician Diogo Clemente. Fado Tradicional received positive reviews from music critics, both in Portugal and internationally. Fado Tradicional was a certified platinum record in Portugal on the day of its release, for the sale of more than 20,000 copies.

Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of one of the most popular reggae LPs ever released. Alton Ellis is one of the most influential artistes in the history of Jamaican music. During a recording career that spanned some five decades, Alton Nehemiah Ellis wrote and recorded some of the most popular and influential ska, rock steady and reggae recordings of all-time. After making his debut in 1960, the immensely talented performer swiftly established a reputation as one of Jamaica's most popular and revered artistes, recording a catalog of hit singles, most notably for Duke Reid's famed Treasure Isle Records. In 1973, a dozen of the singer-songwriter's Treasure Isle tracks were gathered on Mr. Soul Of Jamaica - a best-selling LP, which concurrently saw issue in the UK as Greatest Hits. This seminal album forms the basis of this indispensable set, which also contains the remainder of Ellis's Duke Reid-produced output from the mid-'60s onwards, with the bonus material including a host of long-lost rarities and previously unissued alternate takes!

As part of Verve's Standards: Great Songs/Great Performances series, pianist Oscar Peterson is spotlighted on eight tracks recorded in the ‘50s. This set is aimed at the casual listener and includes top-notch performances of "Cheek to Cheek," "That Old Black Magic," and "Georgia on My Mind." The shifting Peterson trio includes guitarists Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Ed Thigpen. Trumpeter Clark Terry shares solo space with Peterson on “Mack the Knife.”

Mike Oldfield's groundbreaking album Tubular Bells is arguably the finest conglomeration of off-centered instruments concerted together to form a single unique piece. A variety of instruments are combined to create an excitable multitude of rhythms, tones, pitches, and harmonies that all fuse neatly into each other, resulting in an astounding plethora of music. Oldfield plays all the instruments himself, including such oddities as the Farfisa organ, the Lowrey organ, and the flageolet. The familiar eerie opening, made famous by its use in The Exorcist, starts the album off slowly, as each instrument acoustically wriggles its way into the current noise that is heard, until there is a grand unison of eccentric sounds that wildly excites the ears.

Perhaps the first example of "dragon rock" – a style perfected by bands like Iron Maiden and Dio in the early to mid-'80s – was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, a rather pretentious 1975 collection from the guitarist's first post-Deep Purple project. Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio provides the goblin-like frontman presence required by the increasingly Baroque Blackmore. The young Dio is at his best when he fully gives in to his own and Blackmore's medieval fantasy leanings, in hard-rocking tracks like "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" and "Man on the Silver Mountain." The dark, trudging doom rock of "Self Portrait" most clearly showcases what they were capable of.

A rare solo performance by one of jazz’s great originals, Canadian pianist Paul Bley, recorded live at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 2008 by Jan Erik Kongshaug and Manfred Eicher. There is nothing else quite like a Paul Bley concert. As the New York Times noted, “Mr. Bley long ago found a way to express his long, elegant, voluminous thoughts in a manner that implies complete autonomy from its given setting but isn’t quite free jazz. The music runs on a mixture of deep historical knowledge and its own inviolable principles." Here Bley, encouraged by an attentive and enthusiastic Norwegian audience shapes music in the moment, plays his own compositions, and brings the music to a fine conclusion in a performance of Sonny Rollins’s “Pent-Up House”.

Never as hip as other Fillmore-era bands, The Beach Boys were undeniably among the most innovative groups of the 1960s, thanks to Brian Wilson's production and arrangement skills, and the group s near-perfect vocal harmonies. They created some of the most compelling recordings of that decade which remain as potent today as they ever were. This set, recorded live on the closing night of New York s Fillmore East in 1971, captures the group at a time when their performance abilities were at a peak and just as they were finishing up the recording of one of their finest late-era studio albums, Surf's Up. Although Brian was no longer performing with the band, and Dennis Wilson (due to a hand injury) had been replaced on drums by Mike Kowalski, the core group of Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine was still intact - and more than capable of delivering a great show.

Cowboy Junkies release Open to Beauty, a transparent yellow 3-LP and 2 CD collection of songs from their 21st century albums to date. This ‘Best Of’ set revisits selected tracks from albums Open, One Soul Now, Early 21st Century Blues, At The End of Paths Taken, Renmin Park, Demons, Sing In My Meadow, The Wilderness, All That Reckoning, Songs of the Recollection, and Such Ferocious Beauty. Speaking about the new collection, Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins said: “We are now 25 years into this century, the beginning of which saw us leave the world of major labels and return to making music as an independent band. The sophomore release from the freshly re-imagined Penguin Cafe is the culmination of two years work that has seen Arthur Jeffes - son of original composer and Penguin Cafe Orchestra founder Simon Jeffes - investigate whole new areas of sound and vibrancy, alongside his eclectic collection of musicians and characters, marking an ambitious extension from their debut 'A Matter of Life' (2011). The catalyst for the new recording came about when Jeffes worked on a project with the International Space Orchestra and NASA Ames in 2012, out of which came the pieces Aurora and 1420, which have since been beamed into space as part of NASA's Kepler project. These touchstones marked a satellitic beginning for a new album, a collection of songs that would then return to earth to undertake a rich, cross-continental, musical journey.

Pretty much every record released during the psychedelic era by EMI’s various satellite labels was honed and buffed to opaque perfection by the studio technocrats who were working for the company.
