KOMITAS was one of the first Armenian musicians to undergo classical Western musical training, in Berlin, in addition to music education in his own country. He published both folksong collections and writings on Armenian church melodies, and his work laid the foundations for the development of a clearly defined national musical style. The Seven Folk Dances evoke the specific timbres of Armenian instruments, the Seven Songs for Piano are fleeting and lyrical while the Twelve Children’s Pieces based on folk-themes are beautifully crisp. Msho-Shoror is one of the most ancient of all Armenian dances.

In July of 1955 when the music in this album was recorded, none of the principals concerned had any idea that the tapes would one day find themselves on the market. The purpose was merely to record material suitable for demonstrations. As a result the performers were under no strain whatever, and the playing clearly shows a spontaneity and vitality that one seldom hears outside of live and informal performances. In keeping with the nature of the music, intimate microphone placement was employed with the result that certain extra-musical sounds are clearly audible at times.

« FEVER » is a powerful, impassioned portrait raised to sublimity by the magical sound of Claire Chevallier's Erard. A great collector of pianos, she lives surrounded by them; they are part of her daily world. It was after buying an 1876 Erard, Liszt's favourite piano, that she felt the presence of the great composer behind its very characteristic sound and found she wanted to make this recording.

"Continuing its excellent series of Guarnieri symphonies, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under John Neschling presents another programme of marvellous music that deserves the widest possible exposure outside of its native Brazil … Neschling and his orchestra turn in first-rate playing … this is world-class music making in the service of world-class music. Glorious sonics, solid on the bottom and bright but never shrill on top, complete a most attractive picture."

Since Bach was more than cryptic in indicating the instrumentation of what is often regarded as his musical testament, The Art of Fugue has been subjected to an infinite variety of arrangements for all sorts of instruments. This recording follows a series of performances in which the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin tested a highly unusual concept: rather than play uniformly one after the other the contrapuncti and canons that Bach left us, they have made great efforts to diversify both the instrumentarium and the macrostructure – to the point where we end up, to our delight, experiencing their interpretation as an exciting musical game for several players!

Few works stir up as much debate over their 'meaning' as Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. And equally few works can boast an interpreter with such insight as Mstislav Rostropovich. His friendship with the composer gives him an almost unique understanding of Shostakovich's inner traumas, and as with the 2002's outstandingly successful LSO Live recording of the Symphony No 11, he inspires the LSO's players to the heights of virtuosity.

Arcadi Volodos is one of the world’s best pianists, celebrated as a “genius” and the “new Horowitz” for the unique combination of outstanding virtuosity and profound and expressive musicality. Volodos devotes his new CD to the hardly known Catalan composer Frederic Mompou. He believes that Mompou’s solo piano works are of outstanding quality and open new worlds. The fact that Mompou’s music is hardly known is a key to success for this CD. It can only reveal its deep und unique quality in the magnificent interpretation of Volodos. The music of Catalonian composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987) is almost completely unknown today. Unjustly so, in the opinion of Russian star pianist Arcadi Volodos, who has devoted his new solo CD to this remarkable musical personality.

A major figure of 18th century musical Europe, Telemann enjoyed in his time a bigger reputation even than Bach. This great master of instrumental music, open to French and Italian influences and to the new galant style that flourished in Germany, succeeded with considerable panache, especially in his chamber music, in creating a synthesis of European styles at the crossroads between Baroque and Classicism.

In 1878 Édouard Lalo wrote to the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate: ‘Your arrival in my life has been my greatest artistic opportunity… without you, I would have continued to write insignificant odds and ends’. The three works gathered here all spring from this arrival, beginning with the Violin Concerto, composed in 1873. The melodious and charming concerto held a great significance for the composer, who regarded it as his first work truly worthy of the name. In the eye of the public it was soon to be overshadowed, however.

Where Justice’s self-titled debut took a heavy metal approach to electronica, its long-awaited 2011 sophomore album plays with a palpable passion for bygone progressive rock. “Horsepower” opens with a cavalcade of vintage synthesizer tones interlocking with angular guitar lines, sounding like the robots from Daft Punk have kidnapped Rick Wakeman. But dance floor disciples need not fear; the Parisian duo of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay delivers a disco-dappled standout jam in the following “Civilization,” where Ali Love provides androgynously sexy guest vocals.

Natalie Clein, whose previous recording of the music of Ernest Bloch was described as ‘inspired’ by The Sunday Times, turns to his three suites for solo cello as part of a recital of works written in the aftermath of the Second World War. The sombre voice of the cello seems especially apposite in music of such deep seriousness, Ligeti’s short sonata providing an energetic and life-affirming finale.
