Ukranian composer Valentin Silvestrov has said that I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists. This is particularly pertinent to works such as the Two Dialogues with Postscript that engage hauntingly with Schubert and Wagner, and the evocative Moments of Memory II which alludes to Chopin and yearns for an unreachable past. Music is still song, even if one cannot literally sing it, says Silvestrov.

Who was Francesco Geminiani? He is an artist unknown to many but if we look at the story of his life we discover a virtuoso violinist and a dedicated teacher. Although it is impossible for us to know truly how he performed, his works tell us quite a lot about his vision of music. His treatise, “The Art of Playing the Violin,” was and still is a work of some significance and a source of inspiration to musicians who play a bowed string instrument and take an especial interest in the Baroque repertoire.

On Blue Apple, organ is added to the instrumentation, yet the ride does not slow down. A blistering pace is set until "Psalm," a dreamy floating piece so the band can take a breath before fueling the blast furnace for the final assault. Great rock and roll.
The album was recorded in Hamburg at Teldec Studios with Hartmann and Thomas Kukuck engineering. Both Gift albums are fine examples of German heavy progressive rock. Originals of their first album sell for more than 100 Euros.

'I am not superstitious… Nevertheless, when I started collecting repertoire for this album, which is dedicated to Schubert's 220th anniversary, some works on the disc accidentally appeared to be connected. Schubert's 5th symphony was recorded in Riga just about 200 years after it was composed. Franz was 20 years old when he wrote it. Leonid Desyatnikov's 'Wie der alte Leiermann', for violin and orchestra, which I decided to arrange for the viola especially for this project, was composed 20 years ago for Schubert's 200th anniversary. Spooky…

The pieces presented here span 150 years, ranging from sonatas by the British-born American composer Alexander Reinagle, written in 1790, to works by Roger Sessions (written around 1940), one of the most significant representatives of academic American modernism.

Jonathan Nott's exceptional recordings of Gustav Mahler's symphonies are among the most impressive in the hybrid SACD format, and the 2011 release of the Symphony No. 3 in D minor follows suit. This is the longest of Mahler's symphonies, and for many years, recordings of it had been somewhat rare in the marketplace and hit or miss in execution, sometimes succeeding in conveying Mahler's mystical vision, though often succumbing to the difficulties of making such a sprawling work cohere.

For more than 50 years, Mahler's Fifth confounded its listeners. In five disparate movements arranged in three disjunct parts, the Fifth moves from grief to anger to energy to love to joy. The Fifth rushes into climaxes, collapses into silences, hurtles into abysses, and soars into spaces with such unrestrained strength and unreserved emotion that making sense of it all seemed impossible for decades. But once they got it, audiences embraced the Fifth and now, a century after its composition, the Fifth is not only one of Mahler's most popular symphonies, it is one of the most popular of all symphonies.

Jonathan Nott continues his very successful Mahler series with Symphony No.2. The soloists are Anne Schwanewilms soprano and Lioba Braun contralto. BBC Music Magazine described Nott’s recording of Mahler’s Symphony No.9 as “a fine achievement in a towering symphony.”

Jefferson Starship was among the most successful arena rock bands of the 1970s and early '80s, an even greater commercial entity than its predecessor, Jefferson Airplane, the band out of which it evolved. Many Jefferson Airplane fans decried the group's new, more mainstream musical direction, especially after Airplane singers Grace Slick and Marty Balin departed in 1978. But with shifting personnel, Jefferson Starship managed to please its new fans and some old ones over a period of a decade before it shifted gears into even more overtly pop territory and changed names again to become simply Starship.

This second volume of Leos Janácek's orchestral works by the fine and sympathetic Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner is necessarily something of a mixed bag, with a couple of unfinished works, several pieces that more or less qualify as obscurities, and just one repertory work, the symphonic poem Taras Bulba, JW VI/15. That work from the World War I years is vintage Janácek, a programmatic evocation of scenes from Nikolai Gogol's epic novel that has the composer's trademark mixture of vividness and compression.

Something new and something borrowed. In the days that Handel lived, it was common to use an existing melody and make it your own. Handel's Grand Concertos contains a surprising quantity of newly composed material, as well as some borrowings, such as the memories or musical anecdotes, written with intense lyricism and certain sentimentality, previously absent from his instrumental music.

Wilhelm Furtwängler has left us with 112 live concert recordings. Many connoisseurs consider that his most unforgettableperformance was that of 7th October 1944 in the Berlin Beethoven-Saal, attended by Hermann Göring. The programmefeatured Bruckner’s last (unfinished) symphony, and closed with the adagio from Symphony No 7.
