Atlantic Records began releasing 12-inch LPs of hit singles by their established rhythm & blues artists in 1956. An early release in this "8000 'popular' series" was Ray Charles' 1957 album of the same name. It was not only the pianist and singer's first studio album, but also a compilation of his hit singles up to his debut. The LP was re-released in 1962 as "Hallelujah I Love Her So".

Star conductor Herbert von Karajan is best known today for his studio recordings. However, although as a media pioneer he recognised the technical possibilities for creating recordings, he always considered the live concert to be the ideal. Topping off a wealth of full-band recordings, the various stars of Ellington's great outfit recorded many combo sides under their own names. And while not on the same sophisticated level of classic Ellingtonia, the late-'30s material cut by Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, and Rex Stewart is packed with tasty solo work and some of the finest examples of early small-group swing. These later examples from 1958-1959 feature Hodges backed by both Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on piano and such non-Duke luminaries as Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Jo Jones. Like its companion album, Back to Back, Side by Side has a loose, jam session feel, with all the soloists stretching out. Hodges is in top form throughout, while Edison and Webster man their spots just fine. Highlights include the sveltely swinging "Going Up" and Hodges' bluesy closer, "You Need to Rock." Nevertheless, she had a good voice that matched her seductive visual appeal, and her limited catalog includes effective interpretations of the work of such songwriters as Harold Adamson and Hoagy Carmichael; Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer; Irving Berlin; Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen; Cole Porter; and Leo Robin and Jule Styne.

Blue Train is a studio album by the jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane. It was released through Blue Note Records in January 1958. It is Coltrane's only session as leader for Blue Note.[8] The recording took place at Rudy Van Gelder's studio on September 15, 1957. Coltrane wrote four of the record's five tracks. His playing exhibits early elements of the signature style for which he later became known. Blue Train attained a gold sales certification by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2001.

With Charlie Parker under contract, producer Norman Granz recorded him in a variety of contexts, among them putting Bird's sax in front of a Latin rhythm section. A couple of sessions, from which eight tunes ended up on the 10" LP South of the Border (Mercury MGC-513), featured Bird with small groups including veteran jazz players with the addition of José Mangual on bongos and Luis Miranda on congas. All of the master takes from those dates, along with Bird's studio recordings with Machito's big band, have been included on this CD, which also contains several alternate takes from the sessions.
