Trumpeter Donald Byrd released this interesting and unusual album in 1965 featuring vocalists and a full horn section, building on the experimentation he began on this record's predecessor, "A New Perspective". Byrd is supported here by a typically superb band, notably a young Herbie Hancock on piano. Also playing on these original tunes by Byrd are Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Freddie Roach on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Pianist Duke Pearson, while not appearing on the album, did produce half the songs (Byrd produced the other half) and served as arranger.

Released in 1961, the LP includes several original numbers and a handful of standards. Whether catering for listeners or dancers, Quincy Jones would have it no other way.

Recording live at the Jazzhouse in Hamburg, Germany, Terry is spurred on by a world-class rhythm section that includes bassist Larry Gales of Thelonious Monk fame. Terry’s warm, personable tone, technical mastery and inventiveness sizzles throughout as he takes on an up-tempo Ellington “Perdido” and exhibits his famous “mumbles” scat singing style on “Jazzhouse Blues”. Wham! With quotes and asides galore, it’s a merry musical go ‘round.

Big Band Bossa Nova is a 1962 album by saxophonist Stan Getz with the Gary McFarland Orchestra. The album was arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland and produced by Creed Taylor for Verve Records. Bossa nova means ‘new wave' or ‘new trend', and this album rode that wave, making No. 13 on the Billboard album chart in 1963 in the wake of the success of Jazz Samba (1962) and prior to the release of Getz/Gilberto (1964). Sandwiched as it is between the two classic albums of the era, it sometimes gets unfairly overlooked…
