The rarest of all Charles Kynard albums – and a real standout groover from the classic funk days of Prestige! "Afro-Disiac" is a soulful and sublimely understated set of purely grooving soul-jazz fare. Long out of print and never reissued in the US on vinyl, Afro-Disiac features a roster of exceptional talent backing Kynard, including guitarist Grant Green, drummer Bernard Purdie, Jimmy Lewis on electric bass and Houston Person on tenor saxophone. Among the highlights is the smouldering, deep-pocket Purdie showcase "Sweetheart".

From the classic jazz numbers "Stella By Starlight" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado" to the title track, a cover of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles, Green and his musicians deliver sophisticated and engaging interpretations of these timeless romantic songs.

Hard and heavy funky jazz from west coast tenorist Fats Theus – and one of the rarest albums on CTI! This one differs strongly from the label's smoother electric output – as it's got the rough n ready feel of a classic Prestige jazz funk session. Fats is backed by an all star group that includes Hilton Felder on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Chuck Rainey on bass – and it kind of sounds like Fats is playing an electric tenor, or a Varitone, which gives the set the feel of some of the Lou Donaldson funk albums on Blue Note! Cuts include "Black Out", "Bed Of Nails", "Stone Flower", and "Check It Out".

Ike Quebec's timeless, big-toned tenor was a frequent visitor to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in the early sixties. But this album from December 1961 with spare, soulful backing from Grant Green, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones is his masterpiece. The leaner setting works perfectly, evoking an aura of relaxation and monumentality, with the deepest blue of accents.

Trumpeter Donald Byrd released this interesting and unusual album in 1965 featuring vocalists and a full horn section, building on the experimentation he began on this record's predecessor, "A New Perspective". Byrd is supported here by a typically superb band, notably a young Herbie Hancock on piano. Also playing on these original tunes by Byrd are Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Freddie Roach on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Pianist Duke Pearson, while not appearing on the album, did produce half the songs (Byrd produced the other half) and served as arranger.

John Patton, Grant Green and Ben Dixon were introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson and quickly became the quintessential rhythm section for Blue Note's funkier session. They came together for this, John Patton's first album, with two of the label's tenor saxophonists Fred Jackson and Harold Vick. The double tenors and organ trio make an unbeatable combination for some soulful, swinging music. The title tune and "The Silver Meter" were radio hits that remain among the most popular of Patton's recorded performances.
