Now, we're one-upping ourselves with Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, a collection of COMPLETELY UNRELEASED acoustic folk demos from Jackie, taken from the same rich source of material. Folk music came naturally to Jackie. She got her start singing gospel at home and in church as a child in her native Kentucky, and then singing country songs in her teens on her own weekly radio show. And her first, self-titled album for Liberty in 1963 consisted entirely of folk repertoire. But that album only featured folk songs written by other artists. Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, on the other hand, presents a dozen tunes, all penned by Jackie for an album distributed by Metric in 1964.

This album is the fifth in a series of Laurence Juber’s celebrated arrangements of Beatles songs for solo guitar. It breaks with its predecessors by being mainly performed on an electric archtop guitar, rather than acoustic flattop. It’s still fingerstyle and employs some favored altered tunings, but with a sense of improvisational freedom that goes with the different tonal focus.

Jake Shimabukuro released his acoustic ambient album ‘Calm Seas’ on January 30, 2026, marking a reflective shift in his creative output. This project consists of 13 original compositions recorded in Hawai’i with an additional 12 versions available on the digital release. Unlike previous recording methods, Shimabukuro captured the sounds of nature first and composed the music to fit the natural melodies of birds and ocean waves. This reversal of the traditional scoring process results in minimalist arrangements that emphasize the raw expressiveness of the ‘ukulele.

Pullman is a studio-born acoustic supergroup that emerged from Chicago’s post-rock milieu in the late ’90s, uniting Ken “Bundy K.” Brown (Tortoise/Directions in Music), Curtis Harvey (Rex), Chris Brokaw (Come), and Doug McCombs (Tortoise/Eleventh Dream Day); drummer Tim Barnes later joined, solidifying the group’s core lineup. They debuted on Thrill Jockey with Turnstyles & Junkpiles (1998), a hushed, live-to-2-track collection of interwoven guitars that critics likened to John Fahey, Leo Kottke, and Gastr del Sol. Their follow-up, Viewfinder (2001), expanded the palette with percussion, subtle electric textures, and multi-track layering, while maintaining Pullman’s rustic, cinematic restraint. Across both albums, the band became a touchstone for acoustic, song-adjacent instrumental music: folk in spirit, post-rock in method, and timeless in tone.
