Many live albums from the golden age of jazz have titles that explicitly evoke the storied environs in which they were recorded—Village Vanguard, the Lighthouse, Ronnie Scott's, the Keystone—where the history of the venue imparts its own sort of co-sign on the music that was performed there. Those naming conventions also help the listener imagine themselves in the room at the same time, and, typically, in the name of consistency, these recordings occurred during a single stretch of shows. Getz Au Go Go breaks several of these rules. Its title comes from the storied Greenwich Village club, the Cafe Au Go Go (where Lenny Bruce was arrested and Grateful Dead played their first N.Y.C. show), and indeed, most of these tracks were recorded in that smoky, intimate setting on an evening in May 1964.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators – guitarist/singer Joao Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim – to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history – 'The Girl from Ipanema,' a Jobim classic sung by Joao's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session.

This live follow-up to the surprise blockbuster "Getz/Gilberto" was inevitable. Interestingly, the original LP release of the October 1964 Carnegie Hall concert focused on separate sets by Getz's quartet (featuring vibist Gary Burton) and Gilberto's trio: each is as meditative and sweetly melancholic as you'd expect.

One of Astrud Gilberto's final albums for Verve, released in 1968. "Windy" includes a Beatles cover, the title song and Never My Love from The Association, all done with bossa nova flair. Gilberto's young son Marcello joins her on a charming rendition of The Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book. The album was arranged by Eumir Deodato, Don Sebesky and Patrick Williams, and engineered by Phil Ramone.

In 1965, Astrud Gilberto was telling her producer, Creed Taylor, how much she admired arranger Gil Evans and his groundbreaking "cool jazz" work with Miles Davis. Taylor managed to hire Evans for her next album, "Look To The Rainbow". Evans challenged her but Gilberto's aloof vocals matched Evans's cool arrangements, which at times used Gilberto's voice as another instrument in the mix.

At this point in her career Astrud Gilberto was broadening her sound, adding more American pop and standards and moving away slightly from the bossa nova that made her famous. In addition to some Brazilian fare, Beach Samba spans a wide range of eras and material, mainly ballads and mid-tempo numbers from contemporary writers such as Tim Hardin, a couple of standards and even a Lovin' Spoonful cover song with a guest appearance from Gilberto's young son. Arranged by Don Sebesky and Eumir Deodato, who also contributed an original song. This album included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto had a worldwide smash hit in 1964 with The Girl From Ipanema so it made sense to take the show on the road while the song, and bossa nova, were both still hot. Getz and Gilberto embarked on a six-month US tour and recorded two New York shows for this album. One show was at Carnegie Hall, but the show that inspired the album's title was at Greenwich Village's Café Au Go Go. Getz recorded this material with his new quartet, featuring a young Gary Burton on vibraphone, who also contributed two orginal songs. Gilberto earned a multi-album recording contract with Verve as a result of her touring with Getz.

As the 1960s drew to a close and the bossa nova craze had long faded, Astrud Gilberto was now squarely a jazz/easy listening artist, recording sparsely-arranged Burt Bacharach, Michel Legrand and Harry Nilsson numbers. Gilberto called this her "fireplace album" due to the intimacy of the performances and the stripped-down production.

"The Astrud Gilberto Album" is the first solo album by Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto. Recorded after the unexpected success of the single "The Girl from Ipanema" on the album Getz / Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto recorded a solo album with some of the same musicians from Getz / Gilberto (including the incomparable Antonio Carlos Jobim). Astrud's sweet, fragile voice was perfectly suited for singing Brazilian bossa nova repertoire, and the album featured beautiful string arrangements by Marty Paich; and talented musicians Bud Shank (flute), Joao Donato (piano), and Antonio Carlos Jobim (guitar).
