Dungeness, a headland on the Kentish coast of England, is a strange place. It's home to two nuclear power stations, one of which remains operational. The site is also a protected nature reserve and a residential area, complete with a couple of pubs and a "mystical" gift shop. Most of the houses are wooden and ramshackle, home to fishermen. Rusted railway tracks stretch into the distance. Broken-down boats and debris are strewn across the shingle and scrub. You'll also find the "listening ears" of Denge here, a set of alien concrete structures, or "acoustic mirrors," erected in the 1930s as aircraft detection systems. (They failed miserably.) Walking around it all feels terribly remote and deserted, like some apocalyptic scene straight out of a JG Ballard novel. It's easy to see why Oliver Ho was drawn to the place.

UK producer Matthew Bourne composed his new opus over 18 months, during a period of disillusionment. The pieces that make up the Isotach LP were recorded in between bouts at his dayjob, creating soundtrack scores and session work. These improvised, live to tape recordings became a cohesive and emotionally fulfilling body of work, however Bourne admits that he hadn't practised piano in years.

Benoit Pioulard - Lasted (2010)
Ambient, Folk | 40:07 min | MP3, 320 kbps | 92 MB
Label: Kranky

The music Thomas Meluch makes as Benoît Pioulard has always sounded cinematic. Using his deep, hushed voice, acoustic guitar, and smattering of electronic textures, his mix of dusky, introverted soft-focus indie-pop and ambient textures bring to mind flickering, aged film footage. This trend continues on Lasted, Meluch's third full-length under the name. The songs here share sonic concerns, but have no specific or overriding theme connecting them. Lasted sounds like a well-curated collection of miniatures that Meluch had stored away for later use, dusting them off and presenting them together when they felt ready. But it also feels like it's best experienced whole.

Brian says: When George and Myriam approached me to compose for their film they suggested I concentrate on four different themes: The gloriousness of the bees, the endurance and hardships of traditional beekeepers, pesticides and the holistic nature of non-industrial agriculture. I was especially intrigued with the idea of combining some of their mournful aspirations with something more serene. Composing began in May of 2009. I had decided to start fresh not using anything that I had already recorded. Preparing the music for the film, I knew that I needed to provide more built-in changes in the structure of the pieces to give George and Myriam more flexibility.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen is the first installment of thecollaboration between Stars Of The Lid founder Adam Wiltzie and L.A. composer Dustin O’Halloran. The duo agreed to leave the comfort zone of their home studios and develop the recordings with the help of large acoustic spaces, hunting down a selection of 9ft grand pianos that had the ability to deliver extreme sonic low end. Other traditional instrumentation was used including string quartet, French horn, and bassoon, but always juxtaposed is the sound of drifting guitar washed melodies.

Amos Lee - Mission Bell (2011)
Neo Soul, Folk | 51:03 min | MP3, 320 kbps | 123 MB
Label: Blue Note

Recorded in Arizona with Calexico's Joey Burns producing, Amos Lee's fourth studio album, 2011's Mission Bell, finds the singer/songwriter in a thoughtful mood and once again wrapping his soulful folk numbers in country, blues, and soft rock. A ruminative, lazy summer day of an album, Mission Bell is not dissimilar to Lee's last effort, 2008's Last Days at the Lodge, but lacks the more contemporary R&B tracks that made Last Days a bit of a departure from Lee's more granola leanings.

Nathan Bell - Love>Fear (48 Hours In Traitorland) (2017)
Folk, Acoustic | 44:28 min | MP3, 320 kbps | 103 MB
Label: Nathan Bell / Stone Barn Records

Bell has a firm grasp on a folk roots sound with hints of country folded in as he sings of the dignity (and the plight) of the modern day USA working man. Following in a line from Woody Guthrie to Dylan, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Springsteen, Bell’s songs burn with a smoldering sense of injustice and hurt, the American Dream laid bare, factories closing with folk having a hard scrapple existence. Despite the tribulations however there’s still a sense of dignity and pride, the victims as heroes. (Paul Kerr for Blabber n' Smoke)
