Peter Ablinger (1959) is an incredible Austrian composer whose works are really not appreciated (especially by Anglo-Americans, see http://http://www.lafolia.com/archive/covell/covell200108new.html all the way at the bottom). I find his music creative, charged, and quite different from that "Third Viennese School" of Stockhausen, Lachenmann, and followers. His is a sound that concentrates almost exclusively on "repetition and monotony, reduction and redundancy, density and entropy" (Peter Ablinger), and in a way, is a continuation of Morton Feldman's ethos. Ablinger's first interest in art, like Sciarrino, was visual; he endeavors to create sounds of art, rather than conform to the rigid parameters of Western music. I especially love his Quadraturen IV. To me it sounds very much like the music of insects and recalls the energy of Conlon Nancarrow. This piece has been a revelation for my own artistic development.
