Bruce Springsteen Among rock music's most iconic figures, Bruce Springsteen often feels like the one who loves and believes in rock & roll the most, eager to re-create the breathless emotions it brings out in him. Embracing the pleasures of the sounds of AM radio in the 1950s and '60s (garage rock, British Invasion, R&B, blue-eyed soul, emotional teen pop) with the literacy of the singer/songwriter movement and a fierce desire to document the lives of the blue-collar world in which he grew up, Springsteen's music was always a grand, ambitious amalgam. (He once said he dreamed of making an album with words like Bob Dylan, sounding like Phil Spector, and with vocals like Roy Orbison.)

Santana Arriving at the twilight of the 1960s, Santana were psychedelic pioneers who ushered Latin rock into the mainstream with their first three albums: Santana, Abraxas, and Santana III. Thanks to their appearance at Woodstock, their eponymous album was a smash hit right out of the gate, with its single "Evil Ways" making it into the Billboard Top Ten in 1969. They remained at the top of the charts until 1973, when leader and namesake guitarist Carlos Santana began exploring esoteric, spiritual jazz fusion on

Phish The preeminent jam band of the 1990s and early 21st century, Phish have built not only a wide-ranging and inventive body of work, but also inspired a unique and devoted fan culture similar to that of their forebears, the Grateful Dead. Formed in Vermont in the mid-'80s, Phish nurtured an ever-expanding grassroots audience who were drawn to their sterling musicianship, quirky personality, and spontaneous free-form improvisations, which included elements of psychedelia, jazz fusion, funk, progressive rock, folk, country, and blues. Building on the Dead's template, the quartet placed a greater emphasis on live performance than studio work and encouraged fans to tape and trade recordings of their concerts. By the turn of the century, Phish were one of the top-drawing live acts in the U.S., and despite their preference for the stage, they had also produced a number of strong studio efforts including Billy Breathes (1996) and Farmhouse (2000).

Trey Anastasio Since co-founding the seminal improv rock outfit Phish in 1983, guitarist, composer, and songwriter Trey Anastasio has explored a wide variety of musical pathways ranging from atonal fugues and elaborate charts with Phish to adventurous free jazz on his first solo project, Surrender to the Air (1996), to collaborations with the likes of Tom Marshall, Les Claypool, Philip Glass, Stewart Copeland, and others. Anastasio pursued many of these projects during the 2000s, a period when Phish embarked on several extended hiatuses and breakups. After releasing a shiny, pop-oriented eponymous solo album in 2002, the guitarist formed Oysterhead – a group featuring Claypool and Copeland – and instituted a large solo band that supported him both on record and in the studio. Once Phish became active again during the 2010s, Anastasio continued to pursue extracurricular musical ideas in his solo career, including Lonely Trip and Mercy, a pair of albums he largely recorded on his own during the COVID-19 pandemic.Born Ernest Joseph Anastasio III in 1964, Anastasio attended Princeton Day School in Princeton, New Jersey, where he met future songwriting partner Tom Marshall.

Greensky Bluegrass A string band with a big, expansive sound, Michigan's Greensky Bluegrass rode their regional D.I.Y. roots to national success in the late 2000s after years of hard touring and a succession of finely crafted independent releases. Approaching classic Americana styles with an exploratory, progressive spirit, the group's members claim to have come to bluegrass through the back door, citing rock influences as their gateway into more traditional acoustic styles.

Metallica is the definitive heavy metal band, the group that brought the gnarly underground sounds of thrash metal into the mainstream, then reshaped the contours of heavy music and hard rock once they became the biggest rock band in the world after the release of their self-titled "black album" in 1991. By that point, Metallica had already experienced enough upheaval for two careers. Emerging from the feverish metal underground of the early '80s, Metallica became a word-of-mouth sensation with their indie releases Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, records that helped them land a contract with Elektra.

Frank Zappa was instrumental in getting former Mothers Of Invention member Lowell George and his new band, Little Feat, featuring Roy Estrada, RIchie Hayward and Billy Payne, a contract with Warner Bros. Records. The eponymous first album delivered to Warner Bros. was recorded mostly in August and September 1970, and was released in January 1971. When it came time to record “Willin’,” George had hurt his hand in an accident with a model airplane, so Ry Cooder sat in and played the song’s slide part. Lowell’s accident is referenced on the cover art of the band’s 1998 album Under the Radar. “Willin’” would be re-recorded with George playing slide for Little Feat’s second album Sailin’ Shoes.

Little Feat Though they had all the trappings of a Southern-fried blues band, Little Feat were hardly conventional. Led by songwriter/guitarist Lowell George, Little Feat were a wildly eclectic band, bringing together strains of blues, R&B, country, and rock & roll. The bandmembers were exceptionally gifted technically and their polished professionalism sat well with the slick sounds coming out of Southern California during the '70s. However, Little Feat were hardly slick – they had a surreal sensibility, as evidenced by George's idiosyncratic songwriting, which helped them earn a cult following among critics and musicians. Though the band earned some success on album-oriented radio, the group was derailed after George's death in 1979. Little Feat re-formed in the late '80s, evolving into a reliable working band that expanded upon their legacy with sturdy new studio albums. Little Feat weren't conceived as a straight-ahead blues-rock group. Founding members, Lowell George (vocals, guitar, slide guitar) and Roy Estrada (bass), were veterans of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention.

Drawing inspiration from jam band legends like Phish, Grateful Dead, and Umphrey's McGee, the band quickly rose through the ranks of the scene, maintaining a prolific live performance schedule and releasing a steady stream of concert albums (2024's Live at the Greek Theater) and studio efforts (Shenanigans Nite Club (2021), Dripfield (2022), and Chain Yer Dragon (2025). Goose was founded in 2014 by ex-Vasudo members Rick Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar), Ben Atkind (drums), and Trevor Weekz (bass). Based out of Norwalk, Connecticut, the group issued their debut album, Moon Cabin, in 2016 – keyboardist, guitarist, and vocalist Peter Anspach joined the roster the following year.
