After 1683, when Polish troops saved Vienna from a Turkish siege, Turkey was no longer a threat to Western Europe and became a symbol of the mysterious Orient. For European musicians, however, Turkey was less nebulous, as Turkish instruments (including drums, cymbals, and triangles) entered the European orchestra and composers emulated the sound of the Turkish military band. A charming introduction to eighteenth century musical Orientalism in Europe, this album features exquisite performances by Concerto Köln and Sarband, a traditional Turkish ensemble. The opening track, a scintillating rendition of the overture for Mozart's Oriental opera Die Entfuhrung as dem Serail, features traditional Turkish percussion that adds zest to the performance.

Nilüfer Yanya returns with her highly anticipated follow up to 2022's critically acclaimed album PAINLESS. My Method Actor is yet another example of Yanya’s authenticity and innate creativity that effortlessly flows from pen to paper. The new single was written in collaboration with Yanya’s creative partner, Wilma Archer (Sudan Archives, MF DOOM, Celeste), with whom she’s previously collaborated on PAINLESS and her debut album Miss Universe. Throughout their creative process, a clear emphasis was placed on forming a safe musical space where creative impulses were encouraged and all perceived musical boundaries were eroded. This same process is reflected in the albums lyrics, which emphasize unrestricted artistry and standing firm in one’s truest self as Yanya attempts to make sense of the world around her. The album will be backed by a high level marketing campaign, strong press results and a host of videos and creative visuals conceptualized by Nilüfer herself. Following the album release Nilüfer will head out on a full scale North American tour, hitting all major markets.

Pioneering, magisterial compilation, which turned many of us here onto Mustafa Ozkent, Fikret Kizilok, Erkin Koray, Temiz and co, a decade ago. Still dazzling, fresh, essential. Outstanding and limited compilation of Turkish Jazz-Funk rarities. Grey-area edition, result of 6 years of travelling and record collecting in the meeting points between different music cultures; North Africa, the Bosporus and the far eastern parts of Europe. These two first two releases explores what happened when Western music styles such as modal jazz, bossa nova, fusion and funk met Arabic folk music, tone scales, instrumentation and rhythm structures in the late sixties and seventies in Turkey and Egypt. "Bosporus Bridges" is a compilation of Turkish jazz, bossa, psych, fusion and funk compiled by Lasarus and Roskow. Four hundred years ago Turkey was the centre that connected Islamic, Byzantine and Persian music and even at this time Haydn and Mozart fused Persian tone scales and colour of rhythm into their compositions.

Tosun Yusuf Mehmet Barış Manço was born on 2nd January 1943 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey. He formed his first band at school (Kafadarlar (The Buddies)), but it was with his next band Harmoniler (The Harmonies), that he started recording cover versions. Upon leaving school he moved to Europe, forming different bands and recording songs in English, French and Turkish while touring a great deal.

"From the first three decades of the twentieth century, the music here is so transfixing, intensely devotional and sublimely beautiful, that some contemporary listeners thought they were levitating. Drawn from recordings made in Istanbul by the Gramophone Company and HMV, amidst the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, To Scratch Your Heart crosses and mixes the folk and classical heritage of Turks, Greeks, Armenians and Gypsies, Muslims, Christians and Jews, urbanites and country-people, and the demands of tradition and modernity, musical improvisation, composition and system.

Where space soothes and expands, this music sneaks in. Deep, sober, and generous, it is attentive to oneself and others. Tristan Driessens has once again chosen good partners, Cypriot violinist Michalis Kouloumis and Catalan multi-instrumentalist Miriam Encinas, to embark on a journey in search of parts of the world where shepherds and sultans are similar to ourselves. Elegance is meant to be shared. This album presents a mix of original compositions in the classical Ottoman style and anonymous rural dances from Cyprus, with the trio seeking to unite classical and popular music. The passage also highlights how popular traditions are deeply rooted in everyday life and draw their expressiveness from a cyclical journey of constant transmission and renewal, which gives them legitimacy in time and space.

World In Sound's first release from Turkey delivers pure and timeless oriental heavy psychedelic Prog Rock from Istanbul. Besides the usual instruments, they also use a Cello to create a truly unique and deep atmosphere, where the mystical vibe of "One Thousand and One Nights" meets Pink Floyd and King Crimson. Nine long epics reflect a wide and unpredictable, well-balanced spectrum of arrangements, rhythms, melodies, and climax. With no doubt these lads continue the great 1970s Turkish psychedelic rock tradition of Erkin Koray, Mogollar or Baris Manco.

26 Turkish Beat, Psych and Garage Delights Review by Ned Raggett
A European companion of sorts to the Hava Narghile collection that came out in the States the same year – Gökhan Aya provides the liner notes and assembly here as he did with Jay Dobis on the other collection – the rather windily titled 26 Turkish Beat, Psych and Garage Delights is packed with merry late-'60s madness from Anatolia. There's a bit of overlap with Hava Narghile in the track listing itself – among the repeat numbers are "Agit" by Yabancilar and Haramiler's "Çamlica Yolunda" – but for the most part these tracks are new to the digital realm, and those taken with the first compilation will definitely want this one. If the packaging of 26 Turkish Beats is not quite up to the levels of Hava Narghile – somebody really needed to properly proofread Aya's essays and description – what really matters is the music, and that sounds great.

A main attraction in the Turkish alternative rock scene, Mor Ve Ötesi followed a very rough path and had their breakthrough only after their fourth effort. Once a band against capitalism and everything it brought upon the new world, they were, album by album, accepted into the mainstream as a modern rock band singing Turkish lyrics. An inspiration to many bands and the voice of a generation, Mor Ve Ötesi is a top-notch band defining the direction that Turkish rock is headed in.
