Broadway veteran Liz Callaway and cabaret/jazz vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway joined forces for an extended engagement at Birdland in 2011, exploring favorite pop songs from the 1960s and early '70s. The two sisters explain a little bit about their influences and thoughts about some of the songs between performances and connect with their attentive audiences. Whether singing together or individually, they capture the essence of each song, supported by pianist Alex Rybeck's lively arrangements. They're equally effective interpreting ballads like Carly Simon's "That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be" and Marvin Hamlisch's "The Way We Were" as a duo, complementing one another's voices.

It's great to see -in perspective- how Olivia Newton-John has proved to be a great, skillful singer with the capacity to cover a wide range of different musical styles from pop/country to jazz and new age. This album of covers, produced by Phil Ramone, is a good example of the amazing voice and musical charisma of Olivia Newton-John. It's a tribute album so she, wisely, has not tried to overshadow any of the singers she's honoring but what she does is amazing, she makes the songs believable, touching and beautiful in her own way and style.

Sinne grew up in a jazzy home, where her father played double bass, her mother the clarinet and her brother the saxophone. Naturally, Sinne started singing. She graduated in 2003 from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Esbjerg and then moved to Copenhagen to create her career. Her plan obviously worked.

Good news: "The Man That Got Away" is not on this tribute to the Judy Garland songbook. Yes, it's an extraordinary song, but how many versions of it do we need? Apart from that absence, Linda Eder tackles many well-known nuggets long associated with Judy Garland–or as Leslie Bricusse puts it in his fawning liner notes, "Picasso Sings Rembrandt." Eder, a belter par excellence, lacks Garland's brittle vulnerability, and so she isn't at her best on songs that require a delicate touch, such as "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart."

Almost exactly one year after her last foray into the pop music realm with Gold, Linda Eder returns to the Broadway style that made her a sensation with this 13-track tribute to the Great White Way. Tackling such famous songs as "On the Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady, "Some People" from Gypsy, "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music, and "I'll Be Seeing You" from Right This Way, Eder puts her own spin on some of her favorites while retaining the emotional draw that made them popular in the first place.

Dee Dee Bridgewater performs 13 of Horace Silver's songs on her very well-conceived release. On most selections she is accompanied by her French quintet, but there are also two guest appearances apiece for organist Jimmy Smith and pianist Silver ("Nice's Dream" and "Song for My Father"). Bridgewater uplifts Silver's lyrics, proves to be in prime form, and swings up a storm. Other high points include "Filthy McNasty," "Doodlin'," and "Blowin' the Blues Away." A gem.
