These five solo concertos from the Swedish Rococo are all typical of the period. The most interesting aspect is how they manifest variations of the European model. And the model is the concerto for one or, sometimes, several soloistic instruments in three movement followed by a slower, lyrical one and a fast final movement.
Ferdinand Zellbell the Younger was a Swedish composer and a founding member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. He was organist at Storkyrkan, the main church of Stockholm, and chief conductor at Kungliga Hovkapellet (the Royal Court Orchestra). Arguably his most accomplished composition is an opera, Il Giudizio Di'Aminta, written on the occasion of the birthday of future Empress Catherine the Great.
Johan Joachim Agrell born in Löth parish, district, Östergötland, a province in Sweden, and studied in Uppsala. By 1734 he was a violinist at the Kassel court, travelling in England, France, Italy, and elsewhere. From 1746 onward, he was Kapellmeister in Nuremberg. He wrote occasional vocal works and numerous symphonies, harpsichord concertos and sonatas, many of which were published. He was a fluent composer in the north German galant style of the time, and is also an appreciated musician and conductor. According to Per Lindfors, it is said that Agrell composed at least 22 symphonies. He died at Nuremberg.
Hinrich Philip Johnsen born Germany 1717. Organist, harpsichordist and composer, came to Sweden with Adolf Fredrik’s royal court orchestra in 1743. Organist of Klara Church 1745, court organist 1763. Chief conductor of the French theatre company 1763−71, member of the Order of Freemasons 1757. Founding member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music 1771, archivist 1771−72. Concurrently, he taught music theory at the educational institution of the academy. Although Johnsen wrote orchestral works, incidental music and chamber music, first and foremost he was an organist and teacher.
