The Aeolus issue of Bob van Asperen's Krieg und Frieden (War and Peace) is a rather unusual survey in several ways. The central theme of this is tied to the two major conflicts in continental Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the 80 Years War and the 30 Years War, both of which were ultimately resolved by the Westphalian Peace Accord of 1648. Generally when we think of the so-called battle pieces of olden times it brings up memories of music that is rather arcane and none too challenging – thundering, repeated major triads with a rolling tremolo in the bass. Not so here. The pieces van Asperen has revived here are pretty challenging, whether in the clattering tone clusters in the Anonymous Spanish piece Batalha de 6. Tom or the shouted cannon shots in Byrd's The Battle, these pieces keep you on the edge of your seat. As shown in the example of Biber's somewhat later Battaglia, sometimes it is effective to contrast the "thrill of victory" with the "agony of defeat," and van Asperen does not disappoint. There is a weirdly chromatic Ballet from a German manuscript that winds its way downward in imitation of the weeping of widows, and Froberger's Lamentation on the Death of King Ferdinand that almost sounds like some post-modern concoction, stuttering and clattering within its mean-tone temperament.
Van Asperen employs three period keyboards on Krieg und Frieden; a Martin Skowroneck harpsichord modeled on seventeenth century Franco-Flemish instruments, a 1965 copy of 1580 Flemish Virginal, and a Rainier Schütze harpsichord modeled in the style of Ferrini. They sound very different from another, and the multi-manual Skowroneck instrument even manages to sound different from itself within the same piece. At times, the volume level tends to go a little up or down depending on the instrument, and while it is not a distracting effect, it is noticeable. Nonetheless, this is a very nice period keyboard instrument disc, and van Asperen's readings of these rare pieces, many only known to him, are right on the money. His dazzling reading of Peter Philips' Pavana und Galliarda Dolorosa, which survives only in a Dutch manuscript source, is worth the price of the disc by itself. However, the booklet is a little hard to figure out; as its design elements are varied and scattered throughout, and the text, given in German, Dutch, English, and French, is divvied up among the pages in a similar fashion, readers might encounter some difficulty in keeping track of where they are in the text. The text does have the virtue of being informative and well written, by the way.
