    Overshadowed by such prominent Spanish Renaissance composers as Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, and Tomás Luis de Victoria, Juan Esquivel was considered a minor and fairly obscure figure until his reputation was elevated by inclusion in the revised edition of Robert Stevenson’s Spanish Cathedral Music in the Golden Age. Today, his works are increasingly appreciated by modern scholars and listeners thanks to the discovery in 1973 of a large volume of Esquivel’s music, published in 1613, which included masses, psalms, Magnificats, hymns, a Te Deum, a Requiem, and numerous antiphons and responsories. De Profundis – an all-male chamber choir of 22 voices based in Cambridge – performs in the vocal tradition of the Spanish cathedral choirs of the period, and its leader, Eamonn Dougan, achieves a fine blend of voices that is magnificently complemented by the resonant acoustics of St. George’s Church, Cambridge. The group gives pride of place to Esquivel’s parody mass, Missa Hortus Conclusus, based on the motet of the same name by Rodrigo de Ceballos; translated as “enclosed garden,” the text refers to the love imagery of the Song of Songs. The mass movements are separated by the antiphon Veni, Domine, and the communion meditation, Ego sum panis vivus. The rest of the program is devoted mostly to Marian antiphons and motets, and Dougan emphasizes the smooth counterpoint and pure textures that are typical of the stile antico in late Renaissance polyphony.
