Hille Perl & Marthe Perl - Elements (2014)

This is a great album for viol enthusiasts and any serious music lover who enjoys lots of bass. What is special about this album,along with the concept, is that it is virtually all Gamba and two of them. To this reviewer, that is the way viola da gambas sound best; by themselves.

Hille explains the traditional concept of the album and describes the music within. One of the liner photos shows Hille, supported by her daughter, posed in a state of rapture with her magnificent 7-stringed instrument. No wonder!

Marthe has written four fine little preludes to introduce the episode for each element. There are four Irish Folk adaptations, one of which, "Flag of Fire," is awesome. The other three Irish tunes have Marthe playing a treble viol, which adds a touch of brightness. Most of the material is made up of pieces by Baroque masters of the viol, all of them very fine. One might especially note the three pieces by the great Marais. There are several transcriptions of other works, including one from the 20th century which sounds very much in place. The performances and recording are first rate.

This CD is a mystical journey back in time that brings some sanity into today's world. As Hille implies, that is her and Marthe's intention. ByA Gamba Lover
