This MDG Gold disc Orchestral Works, Vol. 2 brings four pieces of Antonio Rosetti (or, if you prefer, Antonín Rösler) to the CD catalog that have never been recorded. This isn't much of a stretch of the imagination, as Rosetti's orchestral output is enormous; the contents of this disc include only three out of his 44 symphonies and a single flute concerto out of the 12 composed by Rosetti. Most of this music is neglected, so the automatic question that comes up is whether there is actually something to look forward to in further investigating Rosetti, or if he is to remain one of those marginal figures in the classical era that only scholars seem to know or care about. The emphatic answer is in the affirmative for the first option – the symphonies contain exciting, dramatic, full-blooded music that is equal to the best of Franz Josef Haydn in the 1780s, yet remain stylistically distinct from him. The flute concerto, composed in the 1770s, is lithe and graceful without being sugary or superfluous. The sound of the MDG Gold disc is outstanding, spacious without swallowing the instruments nor pumping up the volume too loud. Flute soloist Susanne Barner, conductor Johannes Moesus, and the Hamburger Symphoniker all do a splendid job with this music, which is well worth the effort and a joy to listen to. The liner notes are excellent reading and provide a wealth of detail on both Rosetti and the works represented. Here's to hoping that MDG will continue its survey of the orchestral works of Antonio Rosetti.
