The Dacapo label enters the graphic territory of its rival ECM here, with clean black-and-white graphics and sans serif fonts and equally crisp contemporary music that makes no concessions to popular taste but nevertheless offers a kind of accessibility. It is easy enough to imagine Schnee (snow in German – not Danish, interestingly) in composer Hans Abrahamsen's work, which fills the entire album. The music begins with an almost imperceptible high violin note as if to suggest sub-sensory beginnings of a period of snow. Abrahamsen has evinced a fascination with snow in other works, but it is perhaps reduced to its essence here. The paired canons of his title, some of them separated or punctuated by short movements labeled Intermezzo, are not canons in the strict sense but pairs of versions of the same small-ensemble music, resulting in constant shifts in the listener's perspective. Abrahamsen has said that he was inspired in composing the music, over a period of years, by Bach's canons and the mix of stasis and motion they involve. As might be imagined, the music poses considerable difficulties for the performers; the Lapland Chamber Orchestra and conductor John Storgårds keep things on a razor's edge. In general, the album might appeal to fans of Steve Reich and also to those of more modernist styles.
