On March 14, 2009, Journey returned to Arnel Pineda's homeland and introduced him as their newest lead singer to a crowd of nearly 30,000 at the Mall Of Asia Concert Grounds. By the time Journey made their way to Manila, more than 800,000 copies of Revelation had been sold and had been supported with sold-out shows all over the world…

On March 14,2009, in front of nearly 30,000 people in Manila, Philippines, Journey had that opportunity.
The occasion was a chance to return to the homeland of the newest member of the band, Arnel Pineda, and introduce him as Journey's new lead singer. By the time of the Manila concert, Journey had sold more than 800,000 copies of their first record Revelation with Arnel. They had also performed sold out shows all over the world and felt a career revival as fans both old and new embraced their music.
Manila, though, was particularly special. Neal, Jonathan, Ross and Deen swelled with pride accompanying Arnel in his home-coming, seeing the singer welcomed as a returning hero by the Filipino people. It was a surreal and moving experience both onstage and off, seeing this country embrace Arnel and the music of Journey.
When you travel as much as Journey does, the opportunities to truly explore one area are often very limited. The band made Manila their home for two weeks, taking advantage of a unique opportunity to connect with the roots of their new lead singer.
Arnel, the son of a poor tailor, took the guys to his old neighborhood where he had grown up. They visited the school he attended before dropping out due to the lack of money. He took them to the park where he slept when things got crazy in the slums. Arnel, homeless at the age of 13 after his mother passed away, stood in the streets and detailed the damage that had been caused by flooding. Collectively, it elevated everyone's appreciation of his tenacity, demonstrating the effort he put into survival and forging a career as a local singer.
Singing was the only way Arnel had to earn a living. At times he sang for food, performing at funerals in the hopes of being fed.
Six months of preparation went into planning the production for the big show in Manila. The band's wildly successful tours of 2008 had concluded in early October, giving them five months off before performing three shows in Japan. After performing in Osaka, the band had two days before the Manila show; the time was spent rehearsing and exploring the city.
Thankfully, a clear sky greeted the band the night of the show. Extreme humidity and high temperatures were causing problems. Tuning became an issue. Everyone onstage, already a bit worn from jet lag, was dripping wet from the heat and humidity. By the third song, Neal noticed his guitar strings felt as if they were starting to rust. But, as Neal says, "that's rock'n'roll."
The band soldiered on, performing songs from Revelation as well as the hits from the band’s 35-year history. Schon had adjusted arrangements of the classics… changes that helped keep the performances fresh and full of energy.
The concert also provided Journey with an opportunity to explore new technology. It would be one of the first live shows ever shot with a special 4K high-definition camera designed by Oakley called RED. The camera has a resolution that exceeds 35 mm film, which gives the footage an extra dynamic quality. Dan Barnett, owner and videographer of Wizard Entertainment, directed all of the filming.
Once the concert was finished, the members of Journey realized they had completed several goals. To better understand Arnel meant getting a handle on his home, meeting people who shared his background and upbringing. They took their final bows that night with a feeling of immense pride. In many ways it was the completion of a journey that had started only two years earlier when Arnel Pineda entered the lives of Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Deen Castronovo.
In late 2007, a deal was on the table for Journey to re-record their classics for a new album with the addition of a few new songs. The only problem was that the band had yet to find a full-time singer since Steve Augeri left the band in June 2006. They had little incentive, understandably, to hold exhausting public auditions or resort to a reality TV competition. Neal and the other band members were scouring the internet to find a new lead singer. The World Wide Web allowed them to search anonymously and with no fanfare.
One night, Neal came upon a band called the Zoo while searching through YouTube. He was immediately impressed with their lead singer. Arnel's ability to sing a wide variety of material, including a couple of Journey classics, impressed Neal as did his tone and vocal power. Neal watched all 40 videos by the Zoo and emerged convinced he had found the voice.
Neal called Journey's manager, John Baruck, who was equally impressed with Arnel. The two of them felt they needed to contact him as soon as possible. Neal sent an email from the YouTube profile link to Noel Gomez, a friend of Arnel's who had posted the videos. At the same time, he had Jonathan checking out the videos as well. Soon thereafter, Neal and Arnel were talking on the phone overseas while the lawyers were expediting the paper-work necessary to get Arnel to the States for the initial meeting and audition with Journey.
Six weeks after contacting Arnel, who had thought someone was playing a prank on him the first time Neal Schon of Journey called, the singer arrived in San Francisco for an audition. It was his first time in the Western World.
The band was immediately impressed with his demeanor. He carried himself with a combination of sureness and humility with just enough nervousness to lend an air of charisma. All of the elements were crucial, as whichever singer was selected also had to be a star on stage as well as in the studio. With a reputation as a powerhouse-touring act, the job of lead singer for Journey is a demanding one. For starters, the songs are difficult to sing and require the use of considerable range. Secondly, Journey plays lengthy shows, as many as five in a week, for six or seven months of the year.
After a rough first rehearsal and a good night's sleep, the next day Arnel soared through the songs Neal had asked him to learn. The band was speechless as Arnel delivered the goods for nearly three hours straight. A weekend at Jonathan's home studio yielded six solid vocal takes on greatest hits tracks. Arnel was in.
A singer in place, the recording project was expanded to include a CD of all new material as well as a CD of re-recorded classics. Neal and Jonathan wrote quickly, and within six weeks, 22 songs—11 of them brand new—had been recorded by Arnel and the band.
Rehearsals quickly began for Journey's first tour with Arnel and the buzz started to get out: not only how this man from Manila had reinvigorated this band, but the talk was also about the new songs recapturing the energy of classic Journey tunes. "CBS Morning News" did the first extended interview with the band; they performed on Ellen, Ellen DeGeneres' popular talk show just prior to heading to Chile where Arnel would make his debut performance. People Magazine and CQ picked up the story as well.
Arnel's first show was in front of an enormous crowd—18,000 people in the audience at Vina Del Mar and on television in millions in homes throughout South America and other Spanish-speaking countries. By the second show, in front of 12,000 in Santiago, Chile, Arnel had proven he could command a large stadium audience, not only with flawless singing, but also with animated stage antics that included considerable running around the stage and gravity-defying leaps.
Arnel's third live concert, in Las Vegas, was filmed to be included as a bonus DVD for the Revelations package being sold exclusively at Walmart. That night, the members of Journey noticed they also had a lot of new fans —Filipinos coming out to support this talented vocalist from their homeland.
A European tour followed that included a performance at the Arrow Rock Classic in Holland. In front of 35,000 people, the band continued to win over critics as well as new fans. A U.S. summer tour with Heart and Cheap Trick set attendance records in most cities, selling out everywhere while "After All These Years" became top five hit at AC radio. Satellite radio was playing "Never Walk Away" and “Where Did I Lose Your Love,” which were receiving strong responses at the shows as well.
In the U.S., Revelation sold 104,000 copies in its first week, entering Billboard's Top 200 album chart at No. 5. The album also entered the national charts in six countries in Europe in its fi rst week of release. Besides the strong showing on the charts, it was greeted with stellar reviews.
Within a few months, Revelation was certified platinum, Journey’s 11th album to achieve that status. In the fall of 2008, Journey’s classic "Don’t Stop Believin’" set a new high-water mark for digital downloads, topping 2 million in online sales and becoming the most downloaded track in the history of iTunes.
From the first rehearsals to the final show on the stateside tour, documentary fiImmaker Ramona Diaz had been capturing all of it. Diaz, a Filipino-American is an award-winning filmmaker known best for her documentary on Imelda Marcos. She and the band members agreed Manila would the perfect setting for the film's finale.
Neal, Jonathan, Ross and Deen departed the Philippines humbled and honored by the fact that a small country thousands of miles from their California home, would choose to embrace Arnel and their music with such enthusiasm and excitement.
