Legendary Japanese jazz guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi formed the New Directions trio in 1969, with Motoharu Yoshizawa on bass and cello and Yoshisaburo Toyozumi on percussion. Their first recordings together were published a year later on the original issue of this wonderful album. Takayanagi was prominent in the Japanese swing and bebop scenes from the 1950s onwards, but found a new lease of life in the uninhibited improv of New Directions, a platform he could use to divorce his playing not only from the conventional harmonics of jazz, but even the shackles of his own instrument, using violin bows and table-top guitars in the style of Keith Rowe. Consequently the dynamics of Takayanagi's performance tend towards feedback and heavy waves of noise - pretty radical for its time. There are a couple of beautiful solo guitar miniatures in there too: both 'Sick… Sick… Sickness… My Aunt' and 'Deepening Swamp' sounding at once visceral yet strangely refined. The relationship between the guitar and Yoshizawa's strings elsewhere make for some pretty radical textural upheaval, particularly on the incredible 'Harman's Pipe Of Spain', in which Takayanagi makes like Derek Bailey, scraping and yanking his way through the piece, but with a few glimmers of his wonderful technique thrown in along the way. A remarkable free jazz recording this, and one which doesn't sound at all like the fruits of a single, spontaneous session, but rather a laboured and varied sequence of recordings.Tracklist:
