Project Harmonia Mundi - Part 17

Debussy: Images Oubliées [HMC901947.48] Alain Planes
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/289MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Souvenirs du Louvre. Alain Planès here concludes his recording of Debussy’s complete solo piano works, combining incidental music for the stage, isolated and occasional pieces with acknowledged masterpieces such as the suite Pour le piano. The portrait of ‘Claude de France’ comes into sharper focus, revealing a creator frequently racked by doubt and a ‘curious urge never to finish a piece’: many relatively early scores (Danse bohémienne, Rêverie, Mazurka) were never published during the composer’s lifetime, including three Images from 1894, not issued until 1977!

Bach Goldberg Variations [HMU907425.26] Richard Egarr
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 2CD/568MB | Small Front Cover | RS.com

The unabridged Goldberg Variations, summum of J.S. Bach's keyboard compositions, performed on a harpsichord modeled after Ruckers, re-voiced in quill, and tuned according to a newly discovered system which may have been Bach's own. The rarely heard 14 Goldberg Canons are an added bonus

Bartok: String Quartets nos 5 & 6 [HMC901963] Arcanto Quartett
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/266MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

The Bartók quartets occupy a place as important as Beethoven’s in the history of the genre – and of music in general. The last two, written in 1934 and 1939 respectively, bear powerful witness to the creative attitude of a composer engaged in a phase of uncompromising experimentation while still remaining closely involved in events in Europe on the eve of the Second World War. Composed shortly before Bartók went into exile in the USA, the heartrending Quartet no.6 was to be his farewell to the form. This is the first recording of the Arcanto Quartet.

Locatelli: Concerti Grossi Op.1 [HMC901889] Gottfried von der Goltz, Freiburger Barokorchester
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/312MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

A Baroque Paganini!
Like Vivaldi, Pietro Antonio Locatelli was both an outstanding instrumentalist and an erudite composer. He dazzled the whole of Europe with his virtuoso skills from 1723 onwards. To be sure, his Concerti grossi owe a great deal to the model of Corelli – except that, in many respects, the disciple consistently outstrips the master. High positions, virtuoso arpeggios, triple stopping, complex trills, wide intervallic leaps at rapid tempo: only Nicolò Paganini was to risk passages of comparable difficulty, but a century later!

Mendelssohn: Piano Trios [HMC901961] Trio Wanderer
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/228MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

The two piano trios are both major works of Mendelssohn’s creative maturity. Hailed as ‘the master trio of our era’ by the German press of the day, no.1 (1839) was written by a composer who had just turned 30; yet, a mere six years later, Trio no.2 (1845) was already destined to be his last chamber work with piano. After a Brahms CD unanimously acclaimed by the critics, here is the Wanderer Trio once again at the peak of its art.

Schütz: Opus Ultimum [HMC901895.96] Philippe Herreweghe &Collegium Vocale Gent, Concerto Palatino
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 2CD/397MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

The swansong of Heinrich Schütz. In the early 1660s, Schütz, now relegated among the faded glories of the Dresden court, began to prepare for the idea of his own death – he was now more than 65 years old . . . He embarked on a setting of all 176 verses of Psalm 119, without necessarily expecting the resulting work to be performed: his swansong was conceived for all eternity. Ten years later, this Opus ultimum had assumed the form of 11 motets for double choir. Since the manuscripts were dispersed after his death, it was to be another three centuries before the work was reconstructed – and then sung!

A Batallar Estrellas [HMI987053] Ayre Espanol w. Lopez Banzo
Classical | Ape (Single Tracks) dbPowerAMP | 1CD/320MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

Drawing from the extensive Spanish religious repertoire of the seventeenth century, “A batallar estrellas” unites a group of works scored for double chorus, with a spectacularly charged sonority typical of the Iberian baroque. The manuscripts of these pieces (many of the performances are being given here for the first time) have been found in the archives of a number of Spanish cathedrals, as well as from those of Mexico City Cathedral.

El Arte de Fantasía [HMU907316] Helen Coombs, Andrew Lawrence King & The Harp Consort
Classical | Ape (Single Tracks) dbPowerAMP | 1CD/224MB | Small Front Cover | RS.com

In this fascinating glimpse of the musical life at the court of Charles V, Andrew Lawrence-King and members of The Harp Consort recreate the intricate Spanish “art of improvisation” documented by Luis Venegas de Henestrosa (c. 1510–1570) in his Libro de cifra nueva (1557) — a sophisticated collection of Spanish romances, French chansons, popular dances and polyphonic fantasias, which Henestrosa transcribed for harp, keyboards, and vihuela.

Food, Wine and Song [HMU907314] The Orlando Consort
Classical | Ape (Single Tracks) dbPowerAMP | 1CD/283MB | Small Front Cover+Booklet | RS.com

A German Anthology. The pieces on this recording demonstrate the consummate art with which the German composers reconciled the new ideas imported from Italy at the very beginning of the 17th century (the principle of the basso continuo, accompanied monody, the concertato technique) with local traditions, thereby giving birth to works of a subtle beauty and an almost inexhaustible richness. This stylistic revolution paved the way to the flourishing of great forms like the vocal solo, the spiritual concert, the cantata, etc. cultivated by composers as different as Schütz, Buxtehude, Tunder and Erlebach: in the very heart of Baroque Europe the Germans were taking their place.
