Only a few reliable biographical data have been preserved on Johannes Ockeghem: at the beginning of the 1450s, presumably between the ages of 30 and 35, he was appointed as a singer to the French royal court, where he remained until his death in 1497.
He was and still is best known for the extremely difficult technical tricks that he has brought into his works: a Mass that can be sung in all church modes, a canon motet for 36 votes and a Mass called Prolationum, which is essentially a study is in mensural notated canons. On the whole, the present CD, with the two fairs L'homme armé and Prolationum, highlights two very different sides of Ockeghem as a composer of fairs. One set dates from the early days of his career, the other dates a good while later. One is modest and undemanding, the other long-winded and difficult. Both sentences are worlds apart from each other, yet they spring from the same spirit.
