Recorded in New York, New York between February 1977 and November 1978.

Personnel: Tommy Flanagan (piano); Elvin Jones (drums).

A meeting of masters, a true highlight of modern jazz piano. 20 years ago BILLBOARD commented: "The fleet pianist's latest release fon ENJA here is a coupling of '77 and '78 sessions again teaming him with bassist George Mraz and Elvin Jones. The Highlights may include jazz and pop standards like the Charlie Parker title tune and How High The Moon but the playing is anything but standard and the production lucid and straightforward."
For many years Tommy Flanagan has won either first or second place in the international Critics Poll of Down Beat, gained GRAMMY Nominations and has been an isnpiration for legends of modern jazz pianists. ~ Liner notes from the 25th Anniversary Series
This one is on the Enja label and was recorded in February 1977 and November 1978 (tracks 3 and 4). As usual, this features Tommy Flanagan's impeccable and tasteful playing, augmented by the excellent bass work of George Mraz and the drum work of Elvin Jones.
My personal favorite is the first track, a lovely but little known composition by Percy Faith, "Maybe September".
The longest cut on the cd is the ballad "It Never Entered My Mind" which is the only version by Tommy Flanagan that I've heard, the other five tracks having been performed by him at other times on other albums. This offering also features some of the tasteful bass work of George Mraz. The only drawback is the total recording checks in at less than 36 minutes…..which kept it from being a "5". The sound, since it is studio, is excellent.
You will like this if you like excellent piano, especially Tommy Flanagan, or if you dig a good jazz trio. ~ Robert J. Ament

Tommy Flanagan – Confirmation (2005)

Tommy Flanagan (1930-2001) was a post-bebop jazz pianist influenced by players like Teddy Wilson, Bud Powell and Hank Jones. Raised in Detroit, Flanagan came into high demand when he moved to New York in 1956. Jazz greats John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins both recorded with Flanagan for their landmark albums "Giant Steps" & "Today & Now" respectively. This confirmed Flanagan's reputation for playing with versatility, and with a sensitive approach for the standards and ballads.
