This concerto for orchestra in seven parts, is a beautifully crafted work incorporating Eastern European folk and Jewish melodies. While the subject matter is clearly about the Jews and their suffering up to and including the end of World War 2, the music and melodic themes avoid portrayal of the Nazis.
The composer, a native Russian, was exiled at 14 to what is now Bishkek, as his father was considered an enemey of the State (he was arrested the previous year and died in a Soviet concentration camp). In 1945, the then 22 year old Shvarts (Schwartz) moved to Leningrad where he lived in the home of Shostakovich, whose sister Shvarts had met in exile. Despite the proximity to Shostakovich, there is nothing of his music here - at least none of the discordant stidencies that characterise some of that composers' works. Shvarts style is his own, with fast moving dance themes and glorious heart-breaking melodies.
A special note has to be made of the many soloists who highlight each movement. Additionally, The National Philharmonic of Russia plays splendidly under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov, and the recording in (hybrid) multi-channel SA-CD is sumptuous.–Roderick Keech
