Although Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) was only 49 when he died he produced an enormous quantity of music including symphonies, symphonic poems, chamber music, liturgical music and piano pieces. His most significant works, however, were his operas, in particular "Sarka" and "The Bride of Messina".

"The Bride of Messina", then, is very much a music drama. There are no detachable arias, the vocal parts being written in a sort of lyrical recitative which becomes more melodic at moments of heightened emotion. Fibich's approach to word setting is not unlike Faure's in his opera, "Penelope". However, the main melodic interest in "The Bride of Messina" lies in the orchestral motivic web, just occasionally referred to in the vocal parts, which unifies the music.
