Born on 25 January 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA), Benny Golson was introduced to music's various facets as a child. His trajectory as a professional tenor saxophone player was initiated in 1951 when he joined Bull Moose Jackson's R&B band. His acquaintance with Tadd Dameron at that time was to be of major influence on his future musical writing.
The mid-fifties found Benny Colson playing in bands led by Dameron, Lionel Hampton, as well as in the midst of a cooperation with Dizzy Gillespie, playing in and arranging for the 1956-1958 big band. His next step was to become a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and to compose several tunes for the band. He later formed bands with Curtis Fuller and Art Farmer, the Jazztet, before moving on to composing film and television music, with occasional appear-ances on jazz stages around the world and recording sessions. During the late 70s, Benny Golson returned to regular live work and reunited the Jazztet for a tour of Europe in 1982. The following year, Benny Golson recorded an acclaimed tribute album to John Coltrane, his former Philadelphia jamming partner.
Although his sound undeniably falls under the category of hard bop, Benny Gotson's playing follows the melodic pro-gression of tate swing era stylists such as Lucky Thompson and Bon Byas. He also represents the rare case of a jazz musician whose compositions such as Blues March, Killer Joe, Whisper Not and I Remember Clifford to name but a few, have become acclaimed jazz standards during the course of his life.
In coming to Greece for the second time —the first time with Art Blakey a few years ago—I find it very enjoyable because the length of my stay has been more than one day. I've had the opportunity to see much more. When Manos Vafiadis of Legend Recordings approached me at the Half Note Club about recording for the label, I was delighted and considered it an honor. Sometimes, when Americans record in a foreign country they will sometimes record quickly, giving little care to a high quality performance. I felt the jazz fans of Greece deserved much more. My musicians: Nikolas Rolfe — piano, George Farmer — bass, and Will Terrill — drums, made sure we got the most out of each tune we recorded. George Kontrafouris was a surprise guest on this CD. His talent surprised and delighted us all. What a pianist' I'm hoping this CD will gain more fans for us as time goes by. As the present stands on the shoulders of the past looking toward the future, we hope it will see us here again in Athens and recording more music for Legend Recordings.
