"The Perpetual Motion" is easily one of the best albums I've heard this year! The Old Dead Tree is the name of this tremendously gifted outfit. This 2005 effort is a conceptual album taking the listener through various moods and metal styles. For instance: "Unrelenting" mixes gothic rock with death metal & doom, "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" is an upbeat progressive/gothic metal tune, "My Friends" has a heavy & speed metal feel simultaneously, and "What Else Could We've Said?" has an almost Katatonia vibe. So despite having various styles incorporated into one 3-part, 12 track, 45 minute album, everything seems to run together very nicely. This is phenomenal, simply phenomenal!! Great production, great CD digi-booklet layout, nice perspective on lyrics that tell a story about a boy's life headed in the wrong direction, and superb musicianship. There really isn't that much that needs improvement here except for maybe a longer output next time. Ha! This is an album that fans of Katatonia, Opeth, Anathema, and most gothic metal fans alike won't want to pass up!
