Delain - Lucidity (2006) + Amenity (Demo)

Lucidity is the impressive debut album of Delain, a unique gothic rock project initiated by (ex-Within Temptation) keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. He has surrounded himself with a number of extremely talented musicians such as Finnish bassist Marko Hielata (Nightwish, Tarot), guitarist Jan Yrlund (ex-Lacrimosa) and Norwegian vocalist Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes). A number of renowned Dutch rock musicians contributed to the project as well: singer Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), guitarist Ad Sluyter (Epica), drummer Ariën van Weezenbeek (God Dethroned) and singer George Oosthoek and guitarist Guus Eikens (ex-Orphanage). Delain has room for new talent as well: the young and relatively unknown singer Charlotte Wessels (ex-To Elysium) contributed most of the vocals on the album.

The first what we hear when we start listening to this demo is an atmospheric intro followed by Within Temptation-like keyboards. No wonder, since Delain is the new band of Martijn Westerholt, ex-Within Temptation synth-player, brother of Robert - WT's founder and guitarplayer. Martijn is heard on all the WT albums so far, and his keyboard playing was responsible for the recognizable, special atmosphere. We can say that Delain's music, thanks to the synths, is comparable to what we can hear on WT records. However, there are also many elements which make this demo quite original and special.
