ERIC BURDON, "SOUL OF A MAN" (SPV) ****
As the voice of the Animals and War, Eric Burdon has long demonstrated a sympathetic ear for the blues and the ability to translate the material for a rock audience. Still, nothing in his illustrious past could have prepared fans for this remarkable disc, in which Burdon drags every ounce of raw emotion from classics by Howlin' Wolf ("Forty-Four"), Son House (the title track) and Fred McDowell ("Red Cross Store"), to name but a few of these 14 deftly selected blues, rock and gospel numbers. There are several lesser-known bell-ringers as well, such as the Imperial Crowns' "Kingsize Jones" and John "Rabbit" Bundrick's "Devil Run."
Burdon put together a top-notch studio group, including Johnny Lee Schell on guitar, Mike Finnigan (organ) and drummer Tony Braunagel, who also produced the album. Burdon's stated purpose was honoring the musical tradition of the Gulf Coast in the wake of the devastation there. He surpasses that goal, conjuring the spirit of the originators of that music while embellishing and improvising, always with reverent regard for the creators.
