Rose Consort of Viols (John Bryan, Alison Crum, Sarah Groser,
Roy Marks, Susanna Pell, Peter Wendland)

Alfonso [Ferrabosco] I, who was born into a musical family in Bologna in 1543, died in 1588, and was perhaps the single most influential Italian musician at the English court during the middle of the 15th century. By 1562 he was a member of the musical establishment at the court of Elizabeth I, and he served in that position until his return to Italy in 1578. While he had signed on with her "for life," it seems that he got into hot water in 1577, when he was accused of robbing and killing another musician, and hence his rather abrupt departure. From 1578 until his death he was in the musical employ of the Duke of Saxony.

Ferrabosco number one had a solid impact on the musical signature of England in the 16th century. He introduced the English to the musical language and counterpoint of Italy, and although he was not a renowned innovator, his technical abilities were a match for most composers of the age.

When Ferrabosco the elder left England, he left two children behind. The boy, also named Alfonso, was also a composer, although his impact was not on the level of his father. Born the same year as his father made his hasty exit (escape?), Alfonso number two was brought up at the Queen's expense and later on he collaborated with Ben Jonson in the creation of a number of masques for the entertainment of King Charles. Alfonso the younger died in 1628.

A quick note about the ensemble. The Rose Consort of Viols performs extensively throughout England and the Continent and, has also appeared on the BBC, and has recorded a number of releases on the Amon Ra and Naxos labels. They have performed with Emma Kirkby, Ellen Hargis, Catherine King, and the vocal g-roups Red Byrd and the BBC singers.

The music on this disc is very well recorded, with wonderful soundstaging and depth, and with the kind of close-up detail that you get from good seats in a good hall. (Sensible Sound, Jan.-Feb. 2004)
Ferrabosco the Younger is especially interesting. The melodious and seductive opening Pavan marks him out as a fully assimilated Englishman. The pieces on pre-existing material are often daringly conceived (though not always so deftly executed): in the Hexachord fantasies and the In nomines he shows greater imagination than his father. But the elder composer has some tricks up his sleeve, too - the piece for six bass viols makes much of the dark scoring. But viewing it in such terms, the son bests the father on just about every count: melodic invention, versatility and imagination. Yet the contest is an engaging one, and not as one-sided as all that. All credit is due in any case to the Rose Consort for their choice and presentation of works. In the interests of the music one readily overlooks a certain waywardness in matters of tuning and sound projection. There are more polished performances of this repertoire generally, but in the company of the Ferraboscos and the Rose Consort the time passed very swiftly and pleasantly indeed. (Fabrice Fitch, Gramophone, Oct. 2003)
