Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860 – 18 May 1911) was a late-Romantic Austrian composer and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer, he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century.

Composed in 1884-1888, the Mahler's First Symphony was performed as 'Titan' symphonic poem in 1889 in Budapest; a further revision was performed in Hamburg in 1893 (Titan, Symphonic Poem in symphony form, 2 parts and 5 movements). In Weimar, in 1894, Mahler cancelled the original second movement, Blumine. In 1896 in Berlin, after another revision, the Symphony No.1 was presented in the actual form, in 4 movements.

The Italian conduction Carlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005) recorded also the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde by Mahler with DGG.
