Fueron Juan Luis Guerra junto con su grupo 4.40, los responsable de lanzar a la popularidad el merengue, considerado como el baile nacional folklórico dominicano, pero en su versión más comercial. Tras el lanzamiento en 1989 del álbum Ojalá que llueva café Guerra y su grupo alcanzaron gran éxito internacional, tanto en América como en Europa y especialmente en España, logrando una altísimo nivel de ventas de discos y donde no era concebible una fiesta veraniega sin que sus canciones tuvieran un destacado protagonismo.
Su compromiso por la justicia social hace que en 1992 lance al mercado el álbum Areito, que contaba con el tema titulado El costo de la vida, donde denunciaba las pésimas condiciones de vida de muchos en América Latina. Este tema fue polémico puesto que su lanzamiento coincidió con los actos de conmemoración del quinto centenario del descubrimiento de América, bajo los auspicios del gobierno español, que contó con numerosos actos repartidos tanto por España como por distintos países latinoamericanos.
Artista prolífico, su grupo ha lanzado al mercado hasta la fecha 13 álbumes, el último fechado en 2004 que lleva por título Para ti. En la actualidad Guerra y su grupo tienen una apretada agenda de conciertos por muchos países latinoamericanos y se espera que visite España durante el verano de 2006, donde se le espera con entusiasmo. They were Juan Luis Guerra together with his group 4.40, the responsable of throwing to the popularity the meringue considered as the national folklore Dominican dance, but in his more commercial version. After the throwing in 1989 of the album Ojalá que llueva café Guerra and his group they reached great international success, both in America and in Europe and specially in Spain, achieving one the highest level of sales of discs and where a summer party was not conceivable without his songs had an out-standing protagonism.
His commitment for the social justice does that in 1992 he throws to the market the album Areito, which was possessing the qualified topic El costo de la vida, where he was denouncing the bad conditions of life of many people in Latin America. This topic was polemic since his throwing coincided with the acts of commemoration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of America, under the patronages of the Spanish government, that it possessed numerous acts distributed so much by Spain as by different Latin-American countries.
Prolific artist, his group has thrown to the market up to the date 13 albums, the last dating in 2004 that goes for title Para ti. At present Guerra and his group take a tight agenda of concerts as many Latin-American countries and it hopes that he visits Spain during the summer of 2006, where he is waited eagerly.
