Kiril Kondrashin was born in 1914 in Moscow. But his succsful meeting with this fist - rate orchestra dates from the sixties. In 1968 he decided to record the Sixth of Shostakovich, loaded of horrid reminiscences, specially in the first Movement. This performance maintains that inner tension and existential despair admirably depicted by a smart conduction and a fabulous sound. And although the last movement lacks of the ferocity that distinguishes the classic performance of Reiner - Pittsburgh, preserves with mesmerizing eloquence the minimum facets of this Opus.
Nielsen's Fifth is a superb performance, not only by the glittering and oscillating sound of this prodigious ensample, but the febrile approach given by Kondrashin. This performance was dated in 1981 and we may really realize with admirable clarity the color, phrasing and display of virtuosistic elegance of this majestic Orchestra, in these live recordings.
So, if you are a hard fan of the Concertgebouw (as I do) and additionally want to enjoy about two pyramidal compositions of the previous Century, try as soon as possible, to acquire without hesitation, this historical album, that surly will reward you from start to finish –- Amazon
