The harmonic version of this piece was completed in 1963 and the current melodic version, played here by The Theatre of Eternal Music Brass Ensemble led by composer-performer Ben Neill, was created in 1984. Like Harry Partch, Ben Johnston and others, Young is known for basing his compositions on alternative tunings, especially "The Well-Tuned Piano" (1964-81), and "The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys" (1964-present). In this recorded realization, 8 trumpets with Harmon mutes provide an amazing recreation of the title's sonic experience as they play long sustained tones that beat against each other on four pitches in frequency ratios (of the complete quadrad 18/17/16/12) which "can be isolated in the harmonic structures of the sounds of power plants and telephone poles".

The players concentration and accuracy of tuning are impeccable. Young recalls two such listening experiences in his life: one next to a telephone pole in Bern, Idaho, and the other near twenty transformers at a power distribution station outside of Montpelier next to a Conoco gas depot that his grandfather managed and where his father often worked. "Sometimes on warm days I would climb up on top of the huge gasoline storage tanks and sit in the hot sun, smelling the gasoline fumes, listening to the sounds, daydreaming and looking off at the mountains". This piece presents a form of group improvisation based on timelessness - each performance is "woven out of an eternal fabric of silence and sound (which) evanesces back into silence until a group of musicians picks up the same set of pitches again" (Young). The buzzing drones move from side to side like a shamanistic evocation as the tunings change over the nearly 90-minute duration. Feelings and memories are suddenly triggered with each change and long silences deepen the mysterious aura.
