Although he is best known for scoring hits like "Lightning Strikes" and "Rhapsody in the Rain" during the mid-1960s, Lou Christie continued to record long after that time and a valuable chunk of his recording legacy is captured on Glory River: The Buddah Years 1968-1972. Only a handful of the songs contained in this compilation achieved chart success (the most notable hit being "I'm Gonna Make You Mine"), but the other songs are much more than just failed pop-chart fodder. Christie wrote much of his own material, so the songs presented here have a much more personal touch and tend to be more adventurous than a lot of pop music being produced around this time. For instance, early songs like "Genesis and the Third Verse" and "Rake Up the Leaves" combine the Frankie Valli-like blue-eyed soul that characterized Christie's sound with psychedelic touches like fuzz guitar and Beatles-ish trumpet obligatos. As the songs move into the 1970s, a few of the selections tread water (an interesting but unnecessary cover of "Tell Her") but the majority of the songs continue to fascinate with their mixture of strong pop hooks and offbeat elements: "She Sold Me Magic" and "Indian Lady" both mix catchy harmonies, pseudo-psychedelic arrangements, and lyrics that tackle love from an intriguingly mystical standpoint. However, the highlight of Glory River: The Buddah Years 1968-1972 is the generous array of tracks that it includes from Christie's legendary lost album, Paint America Love. Songs like "Wood River" and "Lighthouse" represent a spellbinding creative peak for the artist: their combination of personal lyrical concerns like peace and ecology, strong pop songcraft, and adventurous spirit result in accessible yet totally personalized pop music to create Lou Christie's answer to What's Going On and Pet Sounds. In the end, Glory River: The Buddah Years may be a little too eccentric for the casual listener, but is an important document of an underrated artist whose uniquely personal brand of pop music remains as fascinating as ever.
